Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Niche Gamer’s column where we talk about characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

Today’s waifu is Nene Romanova from Bubblegum Crisis! Nene is the youngest member of the mercenary/vigilante group Knights Sabers.

In Bubblegum Crisis, synthetic lifeforms known as Voomers help society function, however they have a dark side thanks to their creator GENOM Corporation. When a Voomer goes rogue (referred to as a Boomer), they can cause death and destruction among the civilian populace, due to GENOM’s wealth and power, it’s difficult for the police to act so it’s up to the Knights Sabers to stand up against the corporation.

Nene is a young policewoman and is considered the Knights Sabers mole inside the police department. She gets a closer look at the corruption and bureaucracy that allows GENOM to operate how it does.

Nene fills the role of being clumsy and cute (pon) among the members of Knights Sabers and is more prone to being a support with her computer skills as opposed to shooting away at the frontlines. She likes candy and snacks.

Nene is voiced by Akiko Hiramatsu who’s still active in the anime industry. One of her better known roles in the past 20 years is as Aki Hinata in Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunsou), hopefully she’ll be reprising that role when the anime returns.
