Sonic the Hedgehog movie director wants to make a Smash Bros. movie

Smash Bros. movie

Hot on the heels of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie premiering in theaters, we learned its director is envisioning some kind of Smash Bros. movie.

Sonic live-action film director Jeff Fowler did rounds of interviews on the eve of the Sonic the Hedgehog film sequel premiering, and one particular interview had the director hypothesizing some kind of big Smash Bros. movie mashup.

“Nothing would make me happier than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros. thing,” Fowler said to CBR.

He added, “That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen. Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That’s just classic.”

The movie’s producer also recently shared similar ambitions to make some kind of Sonic the Hedgehog “cinematic universe” that would have films dedicated to other characters like Tails and Knuckles. Hopefully they drop the cringey joke quips that are rife in the Marvel films.

While a Smash Bros. movie could possibly be done, the majority of the characters in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. franchise are their own IP, not Sega’s, as well as the various third party characters Nintendo managed to finagle licensing to include.

There’s also the incoming Hollywood-debut from Nintendo with their first feature-length Super Mario Movie, which is premiering in December 2022. Nintendo will likely consider more films if it performs well, however they’ve traditionally had nothing but bad TV or film adaptations (except for the Super Mario Bros. Super Show).
