A new rumor is pointing to a shift in Sony’s approach to backwards compatibility with their latest home console, the PlayStation 5.

The new rumor (via HipHopGamer) notes sources have claimed the next generation console will feature a “Remastering Engine”, allowing games from the original PlayStation all the way through the PlayStation 4 will all be playable on the console.

What’s more, the rumor notes the games will be able to run on the PS5 with various improvements, like how the Xbox One X does backwards compatibility. This means older games can be upscaled to run at 4K resolution, with improved framerates, and more.

Sony has previously been quite keen on downplaying any semblance of backwards compatibility since the original launch of the PlayStation 3, with their worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida saying it wasn’t possible, and later reaffirming they had no plans to implement such a feature on PS4.

It’s also worth mentioning a recent patent ignited speculation they could be implementing some kind of support for older games, but it could also just be for remastering said old games with a proprietary engine.

As with any rumor, take this with a grain of salt until Sony confirms more details for the console. HipHopGamer has been correct with previous sources, but we’ll have to wait and see with this latest report.

While details are scant for the PlayStation 5, we do know it is set for a holiday 2020 release.
