Rumor: PlayStation 5 Showcase Rumored to Premiere June 3

PlayStation 5 DualSense

Bloomberg and Venture Beat both claim from their sources that there will be a PlayStation 5 showcase as early as June 3rd, with other events after.

The news comes via Bloomberg, claiming that a “digital event to showcase games” for the PlayStation 5 “as early as next week,” possibly June 3rd. They cite “people with direct knowledge of the matter.”

Their sources have stated that plans have not been changing, and the date of the alleged broadcast may change. Other events may follow in later weeks and months.

The sources claim (in Bloomberg’s words) “Sony is not expected to reveal every essential detail on the console during its first presentation.” Bloomberg states a spokesperson for Sony declined to comment.

Bloomberg had previously used their sources to report that Sony were taking a wait-and-see approach to the console’s new pricing (when compared to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X), along with scarcity of some parts causing issues.

They also reported that PlayStation 5 production would be “limited” in the first year. If Sony are having issues or otherwise taking a cautious approach, this would explain why all we have seen of the new console so far is the new DualSense controller. Another factor was Sony attempting to prevent leaks.

In addition Venture Beat has made a similar report, corroborating Bloomberg’s claims. They also cite the event may take place on June 3rd “according to sources familiar with the company’s plans.”

“It’s important to note that this is only the current plan,” Venture Beat reports. “The company is trying to lock down its promotional efforts for the PS5, but it also knows it must remain flexible during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

While Venture Beat claim the June 3rd presentation “should provide the best look yet” at the PlayStation 5, not all information will be revealed. They report Sony “could” reveal the price-tag and release date at “another date.”

However, the focus may be on gameplay. Venture Beat claim “The company seems aware of the backlash that Microsoft faced for its first Xbox 20/20 event. Fans were unhappy with the lack of gameplay at that presentation. In response, Sony wants to rely on PS5 games that are actually running on real hardware.”

They also support the claim of follow-up “events.” This includes a State of Play around early August, but “this could shift drastically depending on a number of factors.”

For example, rumors persisted that both PlayStation and Xbox would have presentations around May. However only the aforementioned Microsoft 20/20 presentation went ahead on that date.

We have already seen a tech-demo running on the PlayStation 5, with the new Unreal Engine 5 Demo. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney later claimed that the PlayStation 5’s storage architecture is far ahead of anything available for PC.

We will keep you informed as we learn more.
