PlayStation Future of Gaming Showcase Premieres June 11

PlayStation 5 Future of Gaming

Update: PlayStation have now announced the Future of Gaming showcase, with dates and times all accurate to what was previously reported.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications Senior Director Sid Shuman did offer one warning however. Due to the coronavirus pandemic forcing remote working, the showcase was made and will be broadcast at 30 frames per second. As such, the broadcast may not reflect the full capabilities of the PlayStation 5.

“Now that the event is confirmed for June 11, I wanted to add that this pre-taped program will be broadcast at 1080p and 30 frames per second. This eased the show’s production process during a time when many of our team and developers are working from home. The games you’ll see on Thursday will look even better when you play them on PS5 with a 4K TV, as you’d expect.

It’s also best if you watch while wearing headphones, if you can — there’s some cool audio work in the show, and it might be harder to appreciate if it’s pumped through your phone or laptop speakers.”

Original Story

PlayStation will reportedly broadcast their Future of Gaming Showcase live stream on June 11th, according to Twitch adverts.

The news comes via Nibellion, a Twitter user dedicated to video game news. The user claims Twitch ads (like the one above) have been stating the showcase will begin June 11th at 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT). This will most likely broadcast on YouTube and Twitch.

PlayStation had postponed the event from June 4th, which would have given the first look at PlayStation 5 games and possibly the console itslef, due to the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.

Across our prior reports [1, 2] Venture Beat‘s sources also claimed that Sony “seems aware of the backlash that Microsoft faced for its first Xbox 20/20 event. Fans were unhappy with the lack of gameplay at that presentation. In response, Sony wants to rely on PS5 games that are actually running on real hardware.”

GamesIndustry.biz reported (after an interview with PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan) that the event (when it was originally scheduled for June 4th) would be roughly one hour, showcasing on PlayStation 5 games in the “first in a series of updates.”

We have already seen a tech-demo running on the PlayStation 5, with the new Unreal Engine 5 Demo. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney later claimed that the PlayStation 5’s storage architecture is far ahead of anything available for PC.

We only know what the PlayStation 5 Dualsense controller looks like so far, rather than the console as a whole. While that was shown in white, the above advert shows it in the jet-black we have seen since the PlayStation 2. This may suggest multiple colors will be available, or a last-minute re-color.

Bloomberg’s claims that the console’s production will be “limited” in its first year due to difficulties in acquiring the components and assembly thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. This may indicate why Sony has only revealed the controller thus far. This also allegedly lead to Sony taking a wait-and-see approach to the PlayStation 5’s pricing.

We will keep you informed as we learn more.
