Fans of Deus Ex have been clamoring for a new entry for years, and now the lead actor on its popular reboot has spoken out on the lack of a new entry.
Elias Toufexis, lead actor on the reboot entries Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011) and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (2016), has said the owners of the IP – now Embracer Group – are “psychopaths” for not making a new entry.
“…no Deus Ex because the people in charge are psychopaths,” Toufexis said when teasing his upcoming works. In the same post, Toufexis confirmed he is working on Bungie’s upcoming Marathon reboot.
After this quote was promptly reshared via other outlets, the actor known for his gravelly voice responded saying, “Look, I was kind of kidding about them being psychopaths. But they are fucking crazy for not doing another one.”
In the years since the last Deus Ex game, the team put out a failed Marvel’s Avengers live-service game, as well as their own Guardians of the Galaxy game, all the while supporting the Tomb Raider franchise and its new entries.
To recap – Embracer Group acquired Eidos Montreal back in 2022 from Square Enix alongside Crystal Dynamics and a bevy of other beloved IPs like Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain.
A couple years later, the developer was shuffled around in the big and ongoing Embracer restructuring under Middle-Earth Enterprises in 2024, alongside Tomb Raider, who remain subsidiaries of Embracer Group.
Confused? Maybe that’s why we haven’t gotten a new Deus Ex, but we did just get two new Tomb Raider games announced, though one is a remake and both are being published under Amazon Games.
The big involvement from Amazon isn’t some fluke as the retail behemoth continues to pursue its entry into media production – with their very own Tomb Raider live-action series with Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner as the titular spelunker.
It seems the big money from Amazon is reshaping the future of not only Tomb Raider but its lore as well, with the live-action series sharing a combined universe and lore, alongside the new game and the updated remake.
Amazon’s other big live-action game series, Fallout, is reportedly also changing lore in the series’ games as the next Fallout will apparently adopt lore and world changes made in the show.
The last mainline entry in the series was the aforementioned Mankind Divided, which came out nearly a decade ago. Another blow to Deus Ex fans was the news that nearly a hundred Eidos Montreal staff were laid off alongside a new game in the series being reportedly canceled.
The next release for the Deus Ex franchise also seems like it has run into major problems. The long-awaited Deus Ex Remaster(ed), by Aspyr, has been indefinitely delayed alongside canceling its preorders.
