Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sells over 7 Million in Europe, Becomes Fastest-Selling and Best First-Year Sales for a Nintendo Game in Region

Animal Crossing New Horizons 7 million sold Europe

Nintendo have announced Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold over 7 million copies across Europe, making it the fastest-selling console for the region.

Nintendo Life reports the sales across physical and digital media have also given the game the best first-year sales of any Nintendo game in Europe. Combined with how 20 million Nintendo Switch consoles have been sold in Europe of the past four years, this means over one-third of all Nintendo Switch owners have Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

“We’re truly grateful that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been embraced by so many players across Europe,” said Nintendo of Europe president Stéphan Bole. “Animal Crossing has long been a popular franchise in Europe, and its continued growth is due to the love of our fans for this unique series.”

Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to be the game championed as the reason for Nintendo’s recent successes. The game sold 1.8 million physical units in its first three days on sale in Japan (making it the best opening week for a Nintendo Switch game), and analysts later claimed the game sold 5 million digital copies over March 2020 (more than any other console game in history).

Later it was revealed the game sold 11.77 million units in its first 11 days on sale, and 13.4 million in its first six weeks. In mid-May it had become the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game in Japan. It later became the best selling game in Japan’s first half of 2020, with over an estimated 5 million physical copies sold.

The game would later sell over 5.6 million units in Asia by August 2020, as well as outselling Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver in Japan. This made it the second best selling game in Japan of all time.

The game would later sell over 22 million units worldwide by June 2020, 26.04 million units by November 2020, and 31.18 million units by February 2021.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is currently available on Nintendo Switch.
