Nintendo Three Month Earnings More Than Double Same Period Last Year; Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sells Over 22 Million in Total

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Nintendo have revealed that in the last three months they earned over double the same period in the year prior; the biggest factor being Animal Crossing: New Horizons selling a total of over 22 million units.

The latest financial information (including Three Months Earnings and the supplementary Financial Results Explanatory Material) reveals Nintendo made over ¥358 billion (estimated $3.34 billion USD) over three months ending June 30th. This was nearly 109% higher than the same time last year.

Highlights include the Nintendo Switch hardware selling 3.05 million units (the Nintendo Switch Lite selling 2.62 million units), and 50.43 million pieces of software. This is a 166% increase in hardware from the prior year, and 123% increase in software.

55.6% of software sales were digital. Meanwhile “Downloadable versions of packaged software, especially Nintendo Switch software, made up 67.7% of the overall digital sales.”

Highlights in software include the runaway hit of Animal Crossing: New Horizons- selling 10.63 million units as of June 30th. The Financial Results Explanatory Material notes that it “contributed greatly to overall growth in sales.”

The game sold 1.8 million physical units in its first three days on sale in Japan (making it the best opening week for a Nintendo Switch game), and analysts later claimed the game sold 5 million digital copies over March 2020 (more than any other console game in history).

Later it was revealed the game sold 11.77 million units in its first 11 days on sale, and 13.4 million in its first six weeks. In mid-May it had become the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game in Japan. It later became the best selling game in Japan’s first half of 2020, with over an estimated 5 million physical copies sold.

In other news, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was revealed to be the most talked about game on Twitter in the first six months of 2020. Players sharing how they decorated their islands, the antics of their villagers, and the games’ financial success were all likely contributing factors.

Other video game sales highlights include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (1.97 million units), Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (1.32 million units), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (1.19 million units), Ring Fit Adventure (1.17 million units), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (1.15 million units), and Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (1.03 million units).
