Capcom have confirmed the details for this year’s Capcom Pro Tour (CPT) fighting game tournament for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition.
The total prize pool is worth over $600,000 USD this time around, and only thirty-two players will be able to qualify from CPT events through the year. Last year’s champion- Japan’s “Gachikun” (Kanamori Tsunehiro)- will automatically qualify, but will still need to compete for seeding purposes.
The roster will be made up of regional tournament finalists, and the top twenty-six places on the CPT Leaderboard. Ranking Events, Premier Events, and the new Super Premier Events all contribute to a player’s points on the leaderboard. In addition, the special “Last Chance Qualifier” tournament provides the last spot to anyone who wins it, no matter what region they are from.
Adjustments made from last year include “an increase in the amount of points and the overall spread among players”, where they had been reduced in 2018. In addition, there will be less Online Ranking Events, but Capcom have “redistributed some of the events for better coverage across certain regions and have added new events as a way to represent certain regions that were not able to compete online in the past, such as Australia and Middle East.”
The Regional Finals have also been overhauled due to being “confusing to players and fans” last year.
“All Regional Finals will continue to have an open tournament where players can earn CPT Global Points as a way to qualify for Capcom Cup. However, the open tournament will no longer award CPT Ranking Points. There will still be a Regional Finals Top 8 awarding a qualifying spot to the player from that region.
Asia, Europe, LATAM will award the same points values as a Premier Event. NA Regional Finals is a Super Premier Event, and will award the appropriate points values.”
The first match shall start on March 3rd with Final Round 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. The final CPT tournament shall be in December 2019. You can find a full breakdown on the schedule of the various tournaments here, and the rules here.
In case you missed it, Capcom originally intended to use “sponsored content” to advertise the tournament and related DLC via in-game costume changes and adverts in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. This was soon pulled due to feedback from fans.
