Warhammer 40k Darktide guide – how to find scriptures

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Warhammer 40k Darktide is the latest Fatshark title and brings players to the “grim darkness of the 41st millenium”.

If you’ve played Fatshark’s past titles Warhammer: Vermintide and its sequel, you’ll be familiar with the bonus objectives of collecting “tomes” and “grimoires”. However in Darktide, tomes have been replaced with scriptures.

The reason for chasing after them basically boil down to one of two things: you either want the bonus XP for finding them, or finding scriptures helps satisfy one of your weekly quests. This guide will help boil down what scriptures are, and how to begin finding them:

Picking up scripture missions

You’ll know that scriptures have spawned on the map when you select a mission with the bonus objective of collecting three of them. If you’re playing Quickplay you’ll want to check the top-right corner to see if they’re among your objectives. If you’re playing Quickplay and trying to collect scriptures but don’t see them as an objective, you’ll want to leave and requeue; or queue for a mission with scriptures specifically.

What are scriptures?

In Darktide, scriptures are ornate white books that are scattered around the map in eligible missions. They have no gameplay practicality and unfortunately will take up your third item slot where you would normally hold a medi-pack or an ammo crate. Unlike grimoires, scriptures can be temporarily dropped in order to use these other items, and will also drop when you die so a teammate can pick it up until you’re rescued.

Also unlike grimoires, scriptures don’t increase your corruption. This means the only real drawback to carrying a scripture is the temporary loss of the item slots used to hold them.

How to find scriptures

The meat and potatoes, scripture spawns are unfortunately random on every map in Darktide. That doesn’t mean we can’t offer some tips to help you get better at sniffing them out!

  • Scriptures make a noise when a player is nearby

When you’re near a scripture, you should hear what sounds like hissing or whispering. This is a relatively small area though and is only helpful if the scripture is tucked behind a piece of decoration or in the next room of a small building.

  • Know where boxes spawn

Yellow boxes are spread throughout every map in Darktide and contain goodies ranging from plasteel to ammo cartridges to medi-packs. But did you know that scriptures can be hidden inside them too? Make sure you’re checking every box you can see, not only that but have a good sense for where they spawn on each map. If a scripture isn’t in a box, it’s helpful to know since they can spawn outside in any of the same locations a box would.

  • Communicate with your team

This should be obvious, but if you’re hunting for scriptures make sure to enlist your team. Many players want to just blow through stages and if no one else is on board you’ll quickly be left behind. Not to mention you need 3 people to carry 3 scriptures. If your lobby isn’t interested, find a new one.

Also don’t forget to ping the scriptures or tell your team you found one. Scriptures tend to not spawn near each other so finding a scripture signals to your team it’s time to take a break from the hunt and proceed through the stage more quickly for a while.

Scriptures in Darktide are arguably harder to find than their grimoire counterparts and the reward is less compared to them; but that doesn’t mean scriptures aren’t worth finding. If you’ve got the weekly quest to collect a set amount of them, you may have to settle for only snagging one or two each run. It’s a grind, but if you weren’t up for a grind you wouldn’t be playing Darktide.

Warhammer 40k: Darktide is available now on Microsoft Windows (via Steam), with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions coming soon.
