Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Niche Gamer’s column where we talk about characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

This week’s Waifu is Yukari Tanizaki from Azumanga Daioh! Yukari is the homeroom teacher of the main cast of students and is beloved by fans for being… well for being a complete mess.

Yukari’s role is to play as an enabler to most of the silly antics of the class, while also being a foil to her fellow teacher Minamo Kurosawa who often acts as a comedic straight-man within the pair.

Yukari is arrogant, self-aggrandizing, funny, and more often than not completely unhinged and without filter.

But that’s what makes people love her, in fact in recent years women who are clumsy have become more popular. These sorts of characters are referred to as “pon“, or in the west we’d probably call them girlfailures. Either way,
