Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Niche Gamer’s column where we talk about characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.
This week’s Waifu is Squirrel Girl from Marvel Rivals. Specifically from Marvel Rivals because goodness did she get done dirty by 2015’s The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and we won’t be acknowledging it. We’ll give a pass to the variant covers from artist Gurihiru though. You can compare Gurihiru’s style to the typical style of the series below.
Before that comic series, Squirrel Girl was silly but played straight for the most part. She had a few appearances outside of the Great Lakes Avengers and is (in)famous for defeating powerful A-list villains such as Doctor Doom.
Squirrel Girl has been given new life thanks to Marvel Rivals, portraying her as a cute heroine whose face isn’t a mess of right angles and buck teeth.
While Squirrel Girl will likely never be more than a gag character in Marvel, it’s good to have her back.
