This week’s Famitsu (via Hachima Kikou, Famitsu) has confirmed that Sega and developer Media Vision are working on not one, but two Valkyria games for PlayStation 4.
First up, Valkyria: Azure Revolution was announced for PlayStation 4. The game is an entirely new entry in the series, and its coming to the console sometime next winter in Japan.
The story is set within Jutland, a small country that is embargoed, economically, by the more powerful Rus Empire. The Rus Empire has been able to achieve fast industrial development, as well as an expansion of its controlled lands. Jutland begins fighting this, under the banner of “independence” and “freedom from colonial oppression,” and they retaliate.
The above scans have a caption entirely in English, which reads:
“Here lie the ‘circle of five,’ whose vengeful actions brought forth an inferno of war. With their execution, the blood of the brave legions is redeemed, and just peace born. They rest eternally in the land of their birth, by the grace of the Holy Mother.”
The confirmed characters thus far include:
(Editor’s Note: We’ve added some scans via @Wario64)
- Amleth: The main protagonist, and the commanding officer of the elite Anti-Valkyria unit within the Jutland Kingdom.
- Brynhildr: The heroine, and the princess of the Jutland Kingdom.
- Ophelia: A Valkyria that has joined with the Rus Empire.
There are some core systems that were detailed, including the Gouache Engine, which recreates visuals akin to the original (which was built with Sega’s Canvas Engine); as well as the Legion battle system, which is a new, real-time battle system with tactical elements. Unfortunately, details are still somewhat scant regarding the combat.
Valkyria Chronicles Remaster was also announced, and it’s launching in Japan on February 10th, for PlayStation 4. The game will have high-resolution visuals, as well as post-launch DLC, and trophy support.
There will be a demo included for Valkyria: Azure Revolution included with the game, and coming from this – Sega will be looking at fan feedback.
The main staff involved with both projects include:
- Character Models: Flight Unit
- Director: Takeshi Ozawa
- Chief Producer: Youichi Shimosato
- Producer: Katsura Mikami
- Character Design: Hiro Kiyohara, Takayama Toshiaki

November 17, 2015 at 8:02 amCredit’s due where credit’s due; they said they’d listen to fans and they didn’t deliver a new mobile game but a brand new VK entry after so long. That’s great news~.
Mr0303
November 17, 2015 at 8:03 amI don’t think the original game would benefit too much from a remaster, but some more sales on the PS4 couldn’t hurt. Maybe they’ll finally release VC3 in the West as a Vita port.
It is also good to hear about the new game, but the West won’t be getting it any time soon.
PJ_Potato
November 17, 2015 at 8:05 amThanks for funding a PS4 exclusive PC friends!
Cerzel
November 17, 2015 at 8:05 amWhat the first game really needs is to have the pre-rendered cutscenes remade in 1080p with AA. The game looks great on PC but the cutscenes are arse.

November 17, 2015 at 8:05 amDid the fans ask them to replace Raita?
landlock
November 17, 2015 at 8:09 amVC4 has a much better chance since it’s on the PS4 the main problem with VCIII is that it was still on the PSP and VCII didn’t do that well.

November 17, 2015 at 8:09 amYES!

November 17, 2015 at 8:11 amDid they replace him by choice? maybe he’s busy, maybe he didn’t want to do it? There are plenty of different reasons.

November 17, 2015 at 8:15 amI can’t imagine he wouldn’t want to do it given he’s still got Selvaria as his Twitter avatar.

November 17, 2015 at 8:15 amThat’s a lot of blades for a Valkyria game. We are still getting the normal units and tanks, right?
Phelan
November 17, 2015 at 8:19 amHmm those press scans are so tiny that it’s very hard to see anything.
Though… it looks as if new Valkyria was without tanks and guns… only melee and probably ranged ones like bows. It kinda worries me, because for me any Valkyria game needs tanks and guns.
So yeah… there might be a reason why it’s not Valkyria Chronicles 4
As for remaster… meh. I have my PS3 version and it’s good enough for me.
Phelan
November 17, 2015 at 8:20 amThough it’s not VC4.
It’s Valkyria azure Revolution and judging those scans there is a reason why it has different name.

November 17, 2015 at 8:20 amYou’re welcome. now it’s the turn for PlayStation fans to respond in kind and not drop the ball like they did when they didn’t buy enough copies on PS3. (I bought mine on PS3 and PC)
landlock
November 17, 2015 at 8:21 amVC1 wasn’t the problem. VCII on the PSP was the problem.
Cerzel
November 17, 2015 at 8:26 amCheck the Gematsu article, there’s bigger scans in the comments.
It’s also apparently an ARPG now, where you control one character as AI controls the other 4 characters in your party. It’s also set in a new universe, so it’s basically a reboot.
I don’t think this is what the fans wanted, Juan.
Wonko
November 17, 2015 at 8:28 amI was of the idea that Sega had to switch to the PSP for the sequels because of lackluster PS3 sales.

November 17, 2015 at 8:31 amSega, if this turns out good (and gets localized / dual audio / no censoring / physical copies) you’ll be forgiven.

November 17, 2015 at 8:32 amI’m assuming Valkyria Chronicles Remaster is the same version we got on PC last year. Hope they bring Valkyria: Azure Revolution to the west and on PC.
Richard Miller
November 17, 2015 at 8:36 amWho said that this is PS4 exclusive? All Jap games in Japan usually starts out on PS4 but when it comes to the west it comes to PC and XB1.
landlock
November 17, 2015 at 8:36 amIf it’s more of an action game and less SRPG that makes it’s chances even better. Won’t know until we know more.
landlock
November 17, 2015 at 8:37 amActually there are loads of Japanese games that are PS4/PSV only. That’s the new combo. PC usually has to wait for years.
Richard Miller
November 17, 2015 at 8:38 amI don’ think it’s truly a remaster but just the PC version brought to the PS4.
Richard Miller
November 17, 2015 at 8:38 amNow we just have to see if it will come to the west.
landlock
November 17, 2015 at 8:39 amVC1 I think did something like 1-1.5 million sales off the top of my head. Pretty decent for a SRPG can’t imagine VCII sold anywhere near that.
Richard Miller
November 17, 2015 at 8:43 amNot lately since the PS4 has PC architecture. Thanks to PS4 we got games like DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE and Tales of Zestiria on PC the same time as the PS4. And if what Sega says is true then if this comes to the west we will get this on PC as well. PS4 is a big ally for getting more jap games on PC.
DrWawee
November 17, 2015 at 8:47 amBut no western release
landlock
November 17, 2015 at 8:48 amThat’s two games both from the same publisher what about disgaea 5, omega quintet, guilty gear xrd, sword art online, Onechanbara, godzilla. Off the top of my head. Seems less likely then guaranteed.
There is also plenty of upcoming games in the next few months that have no sign of a PC release.
Seems more like a couple of publishers are interested and the rest less so

November 17, 2015 at 9:15 amWell, it just got announced. But seeing as how it’s the PS4.. I doubt this game won’t make it over. I mean, it’s not like it’s got “Phantasy Star” somewhere in the name~.
BaronKrause
November 17, 2015 at 9:17 amIts weird that this never seems to happen, you would assume it would be a simple matter of reloading the original source file and rerunning it at a higher resolution when capturing it, but that never seems to happen. I’m starting to get the feeling most game studios have horrible post release management of original source material.
BaronKrause
November 17, 2015 at 9:17 amThats what im guessing too.
Juanalf
November 17, 2015 at 9:21 amAnother day another PS4 game announced.A PS4/PC combo is a no brainer at this point.
Richard Miller
November 17, 2015 at 9:22 amWell we just got disgaea so it won’t be long until we get disgaea 5. And the others games you mention will come in time. More Jap devs are interested in the PC than ever before thanks to the PS4. But this is Sega we are talking about and they support PC gamers more than most jap devs. So i’m sure this will come to PC if it comes to the west.
Cerzel
November 17, 2015 at 9:23 amI just find it stranger that they didn’t make it that way in the first place. It’s a pre-rendered cutscene, so why the hell would you not put AA on it?

November 17, 2015 at 9:36 amThey didn’t specify~.

November 17, 2015 at 9:39 amI just finished playing the Blade & Soul Beta, Sword Art and Stella Glow come out today, and then we get this news. Seriously, SEGA is trying to give me a heart attack due to over happiness. lol

November 17, 2015 at 9:44 amWe will do our part to ensure that Valkyria Chronicles never dies. As a PC friend, I’m extremely happy about this. I thought after 3 we might not get another game.
Also the exclusive thing probably won’t last. I mean Valkyria Chronicles 1 was a PS3 exclusive, even if it took 6 years for that to change.
Tristan (Chili1)
November 17, 2015 at 9:47 amTrue, but other publishers are jumping on the PC train ever so slowly. Disgaea 1 was just announced like Richard said, and besides that, XSeed dealt with Onechanbara and they’ve been good about bringing games to PC, what with Little King’s Story, Akiba’s Trip, and other titles.

November 17, 2015 at 9:48 amI hope if it does they will release the new game on steam too, I’ve heard that the steam VC is a success so maybe they will consider it?

November 17, 2015 at 10:22 amor you can actually look up and research just why the game didn’t do to hot at the start on the ps3 and not sit there and say consumers drop the ball when sega sent it out to die.

November 17, 2015 at 10:54 amJapanese game reveals tend to start out with only a PS version being confirmed for Japan because… well, Japan.
A PC version will naturally follow when we get to hearing about a Western release, with the possibility of an X1 version for certain more mainstream anime titles.

November 17, 2015 at 11:43 amI think they mean the post-launch DLC from the original game will be included. It’s bundled with the PC port for free, so I’d be surprised if it wasn’t included here, too.
Danny DeMent
November 17, 2015 at 12:05 pmVC 2’s biggest problem was how easy it was to pirate the game. More folks pirated it than bought it, so it flopped.

November 17, 2015 at 4:55 pmWell this is Sega and Sega has always been great with supporting PC. And they just said last month that they plan to bring much more games to PC. But I think first we have to wait for it to come to the west.

November 17, 2015 at 5:06 pmI think we’re at a point in time where it is not an unfounded position to take that when a new entry in a relatively ignored series is announced that it’s going to be a phone game. When it isn’t, however, we’re quite happy to be wrong.

November 17, 2015 at 5:57 pmI would love to see a VC game inspired by the Vietnam conflict, where you play as a special forces unit of a jungle nation thats being used for a proxy war between the Atlantic Federation and the Russian Empire, with a desire to kick them both out of their country and achieve independence and stability. Youd have an advanced degree of weaponry, dark themes, ambushes and booby traps, air/artillery support, etc.

November 17, 2015 at 5:59 pmThey could shit out some GOOD Sonic games to fund it too, lol. Seriously I just want to storm into the SEGA boardroom with a copy of Sonic Rush and be like “You see this? Make more games like this!”

November 17, 2015 at 7:03 pmAs far as Japan only sales, each VC game sold around the same or better than the last so they did consistently make a profit at least.

November 17, 2015 at 9:11 pmSega moved a game that was popular on a home console platform to a platform that was doing badly in the portable market. I’d like to say it was both.

November 17, 2015 at 9:15 pmSenran Kagura Estival Versus on PC less than a year after it came out. We may be getting it late, but I’d like to think they’re getting the message.
Also Samurai Warriors 4-II had a simultaneous multiplatform release by Koei-Tecmo. They have had previous (bad) experience on PC, but regardless, I think companies are getting it.
Idea Factory ported over the redone Rebirth games too, out of their own accord and without a publisher, I think?

November 17, 2015 at 10:07 pmA Steam version should have been announced alongside the PS4 version.
But maybe they’re planning something else for the announcement, I’m hoping for a port of the other VC games.
Fient
November 17, 2015 at 10:12 pmYeah this is status quo.
The first announcement is the PS version for Japan, they’re the main market, the ones getting it first, and those are their main platforms.
The PC version is usually for the west and gets announced later on its own, and they get to promote the improvements they will allegedly do.
Plus waiting for the PC announcement seems to help building up the hype for when it finally happens, makes people want the game more or something.
Thanatos2k
November 18, 2015 at 12:40 amWhoah. Sega might actually finally get it. Crippling this series by shoving it onto handhelds was a terrible decision. Now we can get a full game not held back by hardware limitations!
Thanatos2k
November 18, 2015 at 12:42 amSo Sega decided “Hmmm, we alienated all our customers with that crippled trash pile…I know! Let’s make the next one for handhelds too! And then not localize it!”

November 18, 2015 at 3:04 amI don’t know the exact figures but I guess the PSP version did alright in Japan just not the West. So thats why 3 never came over. Sega seemed to always expect unrealistic sales for there games like capcom.

November 18, 2015 at 3:28 amPirates ≠ potential buyers.
Sure there may be a minority that would have bought, but I would still bet that even if pirating wasn’t possible, many of those individuals who do so would have not bought it anyways.
