Universal Studios and The Pokemon Company have announced they will work together to produce Pokemon theme park attractions.
As stated in the press release (translation: DeepL), the medium to long-term strategic alliance; aiming to “create and provide a new dimension of theme park experiences by combining their outstanding creative concepts and world-class entertainment technologies.”
Several development projects are already underway, and the first will bring Pokemon to Universal Studios Japan. It is not hard to imagine this was spurred on by the success of Super Nintendo World. Nintendo recently announced that a Donkey Kong themed area will be coming to it’s Japanese site in 2024.
It is likely this area will be adjacent or part of the other Nintendo-themed areas of the park. In earlier news, the Pokemon Wonder park was announced; where guests would look for hand-made Pokemon blending into their forest environment. As such, the attractions at Universal Japan will most likely focus on what Super Nintendo World has done right so far.
Along with traditional rides, we may see the use of apps. We will undoubtedly see integration with Pokemon Go, and possibly distribution of rare or mythical Pokemon for the mainline games; such as the upcoming Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
