Unity 4.3 Adds Full Playstation Vita Support

This is great news for aspiring developers looking to put a game out on a platform both in need of fresh new games, while at the same time sporting one of the most diverse roster of games I’ve seen in a long time. In March of last year, Sony and the folks behind the Unity engine announced that the versatile development platform would bring cross-platform development tools to put your games developed in Unity onto Playstation Vita.

Despite several games being made in Unity and put onto Playstation Vita, the full development suite to port to the platform has not been made publicly available yet. Now, they’ve confirmed that the latest build of the Unity engine, version 4.3, would add Playstation Vita support, and just like all other platforms that are Unity supported – you won’t have to alter code to make it work on the platform:

“As with all the other platforms we support, Unity for PS Vita allows you to develop your game once, without rewriting the code from scratch; simply build and run it on your PS Vita devkit. Not only that, you can now create both 2D and 3D games with Unity 4.3, animate almost anything with the native animation system Mecanim, and implement very cool graphics. And all of it can be run directly on your PS Vita devkit for quick iteration!”

Licensed Unity developers will be able to integrate all of the Playstation Vita’s unique features like front and back touch, the motion sensors, the microphone, the front and rear camera, and even all of the Playstation Network features like trophies, party chat support, online match-making, and so on. It seems to have never been a better time to get into game development, huh?
