Review: Ohwill Chaise Sofa

Sometimes here at Niche Gamer we have to take a break from bringing you the latest in games and tech and give you guys the lowdown on some gamer friendly furniture. When the folks at Ohwill reached out to us to take a look at a small form couch that not only had a chaise lounger but also could pull out to give you a couch with double the width, you know we had to take a look at that.

Is this home assembly couch worth ordering or you should you keep making pilgrimages to IKEA? Find out in our review!

At first glance, the Ohwill Chaise Sofa looks pretty similar to the photo. Sometimes when you receive furniture that you have to assemble from China, it’s not quite exactly what’s pictured. In real life, the couch is a slightly darker blue, but the looks are almost exactly the same.

Here’s a picture of the assembled unit in the living room of my tiny house:

Against the blue walls of my living room, it washes the couch out and looks more grey than blue, but rest assured that the couch is only slightly darker than Ohwill’s stock photo. The Chaise lounger is decently handy as a storage device as you can grab the handle on the end and raise it up to put things inside, however the liner the goes along the bottom of the compartment is extremely thin and flemsy, so I wouldn’t recommend putting anything heavier than a few throw blankets or pillows in it.

However, you could also consider laying controllers and what not on top of the blankets, and maybe a milk crate with some games and controllers in it might not be too heavy to cause issues, but I didn’t test putting more than about ten pounds in any given spot.

The couch itself is decently sturdy, though I wouldn’t put more than three adults on it at a time, even with the bed part pulled out. It’s firm, and you can sleep on it if you want, but unless you like a super firm mattress or a blanket on the floor, anything longer than a nap will likely leave you stiff.

The microfiber attracts dog fur, but it’s also super easy to vacuum off and keep clean. It’s also been quite tear/snag resistant thus far as my 85lb lab mix loves to jump up and pounce on this thing, and my 30lb boxer mix loves to scratch endlessly to make sure surfaces are super flat before she curls up on them.

The couch was fairly easy to assemble, but there were two big issues that I ran into: First, the hinges for the Chaise do not line up super evenly, so I had to forcefully press the hinge outward against the mounting rail with my foot while screwing it down. Secondly, the panel which pulls out the couch bed has a lip on it that holds the cushion platform in place, and the instructions said to install it upside down.

I reached out to Ohwill support and they asked for photos, and that’s when I figured out what had happened. I reversed the piece and now it’s great.

So, is this thing worth the money? That depends on your use case. It’s fine for a game room or something where it’ll only get occassional use and small rooms where you can’t fit a larger more sturdy piece of furniture. The utility this piece provides for me is great, but it’s only rated to hold up to 600 lbs. Since I’m almost half of that alone, it’s perfect for me and my wife and our dogs, but might not be ideal for a couple with multiple children.

If you’re looking for a budget friendly sleeper sofa option, $500 feels slightly steep for what you get from Ohwill’s offering. However, if you can catch this on sale for around $400, I’d say that’s the sweet spot and it’s definitely worth picking up.
