Ultima Tribute “The Dark Unknown” Makes Double Its Kickstarter Goal

After 8 years of hard work, Adam Burr’s fan-made tribute to the legendary CRPG Ultima may finally be on its way to becoming a reality. The Dark Unknown – which started as a browser game and may one day be ported to Unity if the last stretch goal is met – has made double what its funding goal was set at on Kickstarter.

An Update from Burr, known in the community as Goldenflame Dragon, explains the situation further:

My Kickstarter is currently at exactly 200% funded! I have no idea how that happened, but it’s really exciting. A little nerve-wracking, but really exciting. I can’t wait to work with Indi on making this whole thing kick ass. Speaking of which, I also just completed a stretch goal for commissioning some pixel art- if anyone knows any pixel artists, I would love some recommendations!
Gargoyle: Strive for Unity! If I literally run out of things to spend money on to improve the game, additional funding will go towards creating a Unity port, which will (a) make tablet versions easier, (b) free me from my tie to browsers I do not control, and (c) possibly allow me to improve some systems in the game without requiring me to to delay releasing the browser version I am currently working on.
I don’t know what the final costs for things will be. But I mention here all the things that I know of now that I will need to spend money on, to let you know that every dollar we take in will go towards something for the game. If we make the goal and it winds up costing me less than anticipated, the leftover will go towards music, or towards a prototype, or towards an unexpected expense- but it will go towards making the game better.

You can download a very early pre-alpha build of the game on its official website and follow Adam’s progress on his Facebook page.

Thanks to Ultima Codex for the news.
