Under new Online Safety Act proposals, the UK government may ban children from using voice chat with strangers in games such as Fortnite and Roblox.
The idea comes as British officials continue looking for ways to improve child safety online. Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan reportedly said the government is considering additional restrictions aimed at reducing contact between children and unknown adults on digital platforms.
Supporters of the proposal argue that gaming has become one of the primary ways young people interact online. Children’s Commissioner Rachel de Souza pointed out that many children spend several hours a day gaming, often using voice communication features that can connect them with complete strangers.
Exactly how such a system would work remains unclear. The UK already requires age verification measures on some online services, but extending those protections into online games would be a significant step.
If the new policies are implemented, it could become one of the first major attempts by a government to directly regulate in-game voice chat for minors.
