Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore Sold 5,000 Less Copies than Wii U Original on Japanese Launches

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore

Update: The game’s sales account for physical sales, and not digital ones. We will keep you updated as we learn more.

We are hearing reports that Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore has sold around 5,000 copies less during its launch week, compared to its Wii U original (Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE).

Firstly, we must clarify the launch week for both games. The sales figures from Famitsu (via Persona Central) are based on sales from January 13th to January 19th. The game released on January 17th- therefore the “launch week” was only three days.

However, according to Game Data Library, Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE (on Wii U) had a launch week of only two days- the launch week lasting from December 21st, 2015 to December 27th, 2015. The game launched on December 26th. The sales figures of the launch week sales for both games are identical on both Game Data Library, and Persona Central.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore reportedly sold 18,797 copies during its launch week (of three days), while Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE (reportedly via Persona Central and Game Data Library) sold 23,806 copies during its launch week (of two days).

The 5,006 copies difference even with the additional day is condemning, when even the original’s launch week sales were deemed poor to some.

One reason for the poor sales are likely to be the game’s censorship. In case you missed our earlier reports, the trailer for the game rose concerns that the censorship that plagued the original western version would return- and possibly even in the Japanese version.

While the official Japanese website showed what appeared to be images from the uncensored Japanese version (and confirming English language support in the Japanese version), it later updated to show the censored version of the same image.

The website updated once more, adding the disclaimer “This work is a universal specification that adds new elements based on the Western version of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE released on Wii U.” This disclaimer came after pre-orders began in Japan. Nintendo then apologized to Japanese customers, and allowed full refunds for those who wished to cancel their pre-orders.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore is out now globally on Nintendo Switch.
