The King of Fighters XIV Producer Wants to Make a Garou: Mark of the Wolves Sequel

garou mark of the wolves 04-04-16-1

While a hot rumor of SNK Playmore working on a Samurai Shodown revival of sorts, we’ve learned (via MMCafe) the developer is still holding on hope for a sequel to one of their older IPs, the latest in the Fatal Fury series, Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

The news comes from a livestream in which the developer showed off some more The King of Fighters XIV, their latest fighting game set for PlayStation 4. They also held the Seika Kyouen tournament, where game producer Yasuyuki Oda made a surprise visit.

He commented on the game, and even threw in a slight tease for the fans still wanting a Garou sequel, by pointing out the title of the event “Mark of the Wolves.”

“I think people here are thinking, ‘Hey what are you doing, aren’t you forgetting about Garou?‘” Oda said. “I’m going to do something about it before I die (laughs), so please keep on supporting us.” He also talked up re-releasing another classic of theirs, The Last Blade 2.

“And don’t forget Last Blade too. We’re going to be releasing details on Last Blade 2 on the PS4 and Vita soon, so please look forward.”

Fans or newcomers are probably wondering why SNK Playmore diverted their main fighting game series into essentially two competing IPs, Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters. While the former was more of a direct competitor to Street Fighter (right down to the mechanics), the latter was more of a differently styled fighting game, but still direct competitor nonetheless.

Would you guys like to see a sequel to Garou: Mark of the Wolves? Sound off in the comments below!

While I would love a sequel to garou wouldn’t it go down the same route as 14 in terms of style since no monies? People should as themselves if they want that. Not thats it bad.

Well, HD sprites with the level of detailed animation that SNK is usually known for is just way too expensive. KoFXIV is testament to that. Hell, the expense of KoFXIII can be found within the game itself. A lot of characters have really trimmed down movesets because they just couldn’t get characters entire movesets in.

They could do it like Arc System Works and have very few frames of animation…but that wouldn’t really be the same. Plus then it would kinda look like SNK is copying ASW.

KoFXIV doesn’t look fantastic, but if that’s what they can work with and make the games just as good, then I’ll bear with it. They’re just not in a position where they can make absurdly detailed HD sprites.

I love Garou so much. That said, I was excited about this news before realizing it’d probably be console exclusive and shitty, japanese infrastructure focused non-rollback netcode. RIP.

I wouldn’t mind if SNK’s next game is a Garou one. They can alternate between this and KOF.

what a complete 180 turn this company is making lol, from being basically dead and stuck in pachinko hell for years…..to making a new kof, stealing developers to capcom of all people ,and openly talking about making sequels of games that even the old SNK didn´t bother to do. Hope they keep going like that for a while, missed them so much

    >The King of Fighters XIV Producer Wants to Make a Garou: Mark of the Wolves Sequel (YES!)
    >“And don’t forget Last Blade too. We’re going to be releasing details on Last Blade 2 on the PS4 and Vita soon, so please look forward.” (YES!)
    >How about putting the original GAROU on psn as a PSVITA/PS4 Cross-buy game as a sort of promotion? (MAYBE?)

Love Garou, a sorely neglected fighter, it’s one of my favs from SNK. I’d be all over a sequel, but won’t hold me breath until something official is announced.

Fighting games are the only reason I still play videogames at all; SNK getting a bigger scene with a sequel of an old classic would be great.

if I played a KOF with arksys animation I’d just stop playing games.

Their sprites look off, especially the persona 4 ones but there I’m not just if it’s the height or the traces from Blazblue I kept spotting.

Definitely a yes from me, but more so I want to see a series of prequels to this that can explain the events that happened between Real Bout and Mark of The Wolves. Since SNK made no explanation as to what happened in between these games and what happened to all the fan favourites such as Kim, Andy, Joe, Mai, Mary and the others. With Terry being the only returning character, it didn’t feel much like a Fatal Fury game to me, and this is supposed to link into the series, with it being named Fatal Fury 4.
