The Coffin of Andy and Leyley dev anticipated backlash over incest

The Coffin of Andy and Leyley

The creator of The Coffin of Andy and Leyley has responded to criticism from social media users uncomfortable with the horror game’s incest subplot.

For those who don’t know, The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is an adventure game where the players control two siblings in a toxic relationship with one another. Depending on choices made throughout the game, you can achieve an ending where Andy (Andrew) and Leyley (Ashley) will sleep with each other.

Despite the horrific nature of the game, some social media users felt that the inclusion of the incest subplot “glorified” it. This is in spite of the fact that it’s a horror game and that Andy and Leyley are not real people.

The developer Nemlei anticipated the backlash in a devlog nearly half a year ago. When talking about what routes would be in the game, they mentioned some vocal players would “intensely despise” some of the routes (likely referring to the incest plot). Nemlei’s response was a meme with Andy and Leyley clinging to one another with the words “Cry about it” over them.

The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is available now as an Early Access title on Windows PC (via Steam).
