We’ve learned that Playtonic Games is partnering with Team17 to publish Yooka-Laylee.

While the game is launching in October of next year across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC, Mac, and Linux, this new partnership is going to allow Playtonic to create additional resources, from now having an external publisher.

“From the very start we said that we’d welcome only a partner that could genuinely improve the creation of our game, while respecting the independence and creative autonomy of our development team. Team17’s 25-year industry-leading expertise will significantly benefit Yooka-Laylee in a myriad of ways, not least in expanded localisation, improved QA testing, certification and access to vastly better resources for our team,” Yooka-Laylee creative lead Gavin Price said.

“Working alongside such a strong partner will allow the Playtonic team to focus 100% of our efforts on building the best possible version of Yooka-Laylee for backers and new fans alike.”

We’ve also learned (via MCV UK) that Team17 is looking into the possibilities of a retail version of the game.

“There is a large demand for a physical game,” said Team17 managing director Debbie Bestwick. “Playtonic took the decision not to include this in the Kickstarter for the very reason that it could impact on development and at the time of their Kickstarter it would have been a big risk. Team17 has lots of experience in physical and will share ideas and opportunities with Playtonic – so absolutely we will be looking into it.”

Yooka-Laylee is a Kickstarter-funded spiritual successor to the Banjo-Kazooie series, with dual protagonists Yooka the lizard, and Laylee the bat. Even though you missed the Kickstarter, you can still back the game via PayPal.
