January 9, 2017 at 2:54 pmDoom only got cracked like the other week and ran fine
Anon_Amous
January 9, 2017 at 2:54 pmIt gets cracked but Denuvo takes time because each release typically has a new generation of it that must be cracked. I’ve been following games and the scene since Denuvo dropped and yes while the games will get cracked, Denuvo always protects the launch window, it’s incredibly successful and will keep being used (by companies who can afford it).
Average consumers probably don’t care about the impacts to modability. Unless Bethesda used it in their next game I guess.
totenglocke
January 9, 2017 at 2:57 pmPirates aren’t going to buy the game anyways, so “protecting the launch window” is completely meaningless.

January 9, 2017 at 2:58 pmPotential customers that would have the game at release anyways? Why would it piss off people who are going to buy the game? I never really understood that. You can be against the concept of Denuvo but if you plan to buy the game anyways it’s not hindering you in any way whatsoever.

January 9, 2017 at 3:00 pmNot surprised, Japanese are paranoid about piracy. One of the reasons why Steam was barren of JRPGs for so long.
I don’t care really I gladly pay full price for my Japanese games. And if other people don’t and want to pirate them that’s fine too. Happiness and games for all. Make waifu not war.

January 9, 2017 at 3:00 pmI was debating on buying it at full price like I did with Zestiria, or simply waiting for a sale if it came with Denuvo. Looks like I will be saving a bit of money until a steep sale.

January 9, 2017 at 3:09 pmDepends if they have other security means in place to identify modification on files, Denvou on it’s own don’t do that, in generally only thing denvou do is protect the .exe for modifications, and most mods do not touch that.
That said Forza Horizon 3 is pretty much the only denvou game where they actively blocked modding, don’t know of any other denvou game who have this issue, there is tons of mods out there for them.

January 9, 2017 at 3:17 pmEven so, SE’s games look incredible. FFXIII had amazing visuals when it came out and still challenges today’s games being 8y old game.
I have to admit, the ports are badly optimised most of the time. Thou I was still able to run FFXIII PC port on the old 9600 GT 512MB in 1080p and get around 40 fps.

January 9, 2017 at 11:08 pmYou mean for Death Stranding? That might be more due to lack of man-power than being incapable of developing an engine. Then you have Fox Engine.
He doesn’t have the small army of developers he had at Konami anymore, remember?
Anyway, I don’t think its that Japanese devs don’t know how to program for PC, but rather they just aren’t as interested.
A lot of them still have a “Japan first” mentality, and as we all know Japan is handheld and console land. As far as they’re concerned, they don’t NEED to compete graphically, nor are they really trying to.
Zero Eternity
January 9, 2017 at 11:15 pmI agree with all of those things. Though when I asked the same thing about Steam dying, someone posted a screenshot of a line in the fine print where if Steam dies, they say they will allow people to download the game via a non steam distributor. That remains to be seen until Steam dies which nowadays is unlikely to happen until methods of gaming change and the current game industry itself dies.

January 10, 2017 at 1:13 amAs others explained above, every new release has a newer generation of Denuvo attached to it. They get cracked, but it takes months to get around to it. But, all it takes is one fuck-up. If it happens even once its gonna turn me off future Tales of games, the same way Ubisoft turned me off AssCreed with AssCreed 2’s always-online DRM shenanigans.

January 10, 2017 at 6:30 amSo I guess Denuvo will prevent us from modding the original opening with lyrics back in and fixing the PC-related problems through tools like the last two times with Tales on PC?
Zen
January 10, 2017 at 7:05 amWell shit, I didn’t even consider that possibility.
I’ll remain cautiously optimistic since the likely reason Zestiria’s OP had to be changed was due to licensing rights for the performing artist (whose contracts in Japan can be quite ridiculous and are often the reason we don’t get Japanese language options in some games).
Feniks
January 10, 2017 at 7:18 amYou can’t have graphics in JRPGs. Want a JRPG that looks as good as the triple AAA Western stuff? Too expensive, you have to appeal to Western normalfags to turn a profit.
Which would defeat the whole point of a JRPG. Games like Persona or Nier don’t gel with the mainstream.
DarkChaplain
January 10, 2017 at 8:52 amDOOM, Metal Gear, Just Cause 3 and others all had ongoing problems with modding due to Denuvo. Only very basic things were possible in some cases, while most advanced stuff that modders would’ve liked to do was prevented.
Denuvo obviously has different incarnations, and is constantly being modified and tailored to the game. But to say that Denuvo doesn’t hamper mods is incorrect, because in plenty of instances, it actually does.

NuclearKangaroo
January 10, 2017 at 1:06 pmhow does it inconvenience customers? denuvo its arguably one of the least intrusive DRMs out there
besides as far as i understand, every denuvo “crack” so far has only been bypassing the DRM itself, and in most instances, the DRM is able protect the game in the first few months after launch, which is its purpose
now one thing ill agree, the impact of piracy is exaggerated, no game ever fails because of piracy and no game ever succeeds because DRM prevented said piracy, but i do think piracy costs some sales, whether profits from those extra sales are enough to offset the cost of Denuvo itself, well, hell if i know
NuclearKangaroo
January 10, 2017 at 1:08 pmits dragonball fam, it will sell well DRM or not, so its not really a good comparison
NuclearKangaroo
January 10, 2017 at 1:11 pmdo you have any evidence of this? because DOOM no longer has denuvo, but i dont see an increase in the number or quality of mods available for that title
the lack of denuvo does not guarantee good mods, and the presence of denuvo does not guarantee the lack of mods
i think that whatever impact on modding denuvo has is very little, what really gets in the way of modding, is the lack of modding tools, this is why total war warhammer has so many mods compares to other denuvo titles, it has actual modding tools
3rdStrike_Ebi
January 10, 2017 at 1:14 pmCorrect me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty confident that DRM means you have to play the game while connected to Internet to play it at all. That is horrifically inconvenient on its own. Add to the fact that many people would love to play this game uncensored and will mod the uncut stabbing scene back in if given the chance, and you have the recipe for the best way to say fuck you to people who cared about Velvet’s uncensored outfit and generated a sizable amount of hype.
NuclearKangaroo
January 10, 2017 at 1:18 pmwell i dont think you need to be online for Denuvo, altough i cannot confirm this since my only denuvo game (MGSV) need an online connection anyways for the tacked on online features
denuvo doesnt prevent mods tough, MGSV has mods, Just Cause 3 has mods and Total War Warhammer has tons of mods
denuvo or not, without proper modding tools i dont think you can expect many mods coming out for this game, i dont even know if replacing the censored scene is possible without those
Milan Morávek
January 10, 2017 at 1:27 pmIf the game has official ways of mods then yes, why wouldn’t it work with denuvo. If you have to modify vanilla game files then denuvo won’t let you and thus you can’t mod your game.
I’m not gonna cry about denuvo, cuz I buy games anyway ever since steam sales. It’s comfortable and I have so many games I have no need to pirate more. If there’s a game I want, I wait for a sale and play something else in the meantime.
buddyluv324
January 10, 2017 at 3:09 pmFrom what I’ve seen of the situation, it more has to do with complying to the PEGI ratings according to Bandai Namco’s official comment which i think it could be why the US version if getting the same censored scene as the PAL version.
TsukuyomiMagi99
January 10, 2017 at 3:55 pmNo it was for 16+ rating for PEGI in Europe since apparently the scene left uncensored would’ve pushed the rating to 18+. According to them this would hinder their ability to advertise the game. What I don’t get is why this reasoning affected the western version of the game especially since PEGI and the ESRB are two different ratings boards. Especially considering plenty of teen rated games here in the west show off far worse.

January 10, 2017 at 11:05 pmI’ve heard through the grapevine that many people have had trouble with modding games because of Denuvo, so my best guess is that Denuvo has a function that prevents modifying a game that can be turned on or off.
As for replacing the censored scene: trust me. They’ll find a way.
Milan Morávek
January 11, 2017 at 6:45 amok, let me correct my mistake: denuvo protected game should not be modifiable
All I know is that Denuvo is anti-tamper. Modding a game is tampering with the games files, which denuvo should prevent. I don’t know the details about how denuvo works and which files can it protect and which it can’t (presumably all files of the game). I know denuvo’s been cracked several times, including for MGS: TPP which cracking the game would also presumably let you mod the game.
Like I said: nigh-impossible, not completely, but very difficult and probably not worth the trouble to just replace one scene.

January 11, 2017 at 7:55 amJust Cause 3 also has mods and that game still has no crack last time i checked
also MGSV’s crack was extremely shitty until recently, requiring a save after the hospital chapter in order to work if i recall correctly
if denuvo truly was anti-tamper to the extent you say, warhammer couldnt have mods, even with mod tools
i think the evidence is pretty clear, denuvo does not make mods impossible

January 11, 2017 at 8:01 ami dont know, have you seen the mod support for games without proper mod tools? its usually somewhat lackluster, unless the game is VERY popular, it aint impossible, but its far from guaranteed
for instance, youd think id be easy to find a mod that balances panzerkleins in Silent Storm, but nope, the only thing i could find is one mod that removes them entirely
or hell for a more recent example, remember how a lot of people said denuvo was the reason the new DOOM didnt get any good mods? well denuvo has been removed from the game, and it still hasnt gotten any notable mods
honestly i think the only source for the claims that denuvo makes modding harder, is a statement from some people working on a Just Cause 3 mod, but the actual evidence suggests modding a denuvo game is far from impossible
