Nintendo has shut down attempts at emulating their more recent hardware, like the recently axed Switch emulator Yuzu. Now, the Kyoto-based company has shut down another popular emulator, Ryujinx.
Prior to being shut down, Nintendo sued the creators of Yuzu saying it “unlawfully circumvents the technological measures” of Switch. Yuzu emulator was shut down when its creators agreed to stop its development and pay Nintendo millions in damages.
At the time, fans of the emulator said they would just use Ryujinx, another popular Switch emulator. A few months later the creator of Ryujinx has been reportedly contacted by Nintendo, who made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
“Yesterday, gdkchan (Ryujinx creator) was contacted by Nintendo and offered an agreement to stop working on the project, remove the organization and all related assets he’s in control of,” a developer and moderator from the Ryujinx Discord said. “While awaiting confirmation on whether he would take this agreement, the organization has been removed, so I think it’s safe to say what the outcome is.”
We still haven’t gotten an official confirmation from the creator of Ryujinx or Nintendo, however, the download page for the emulator is now a blank page and its original Github page has seemingly been deleted and now leads to a 404 error.
The moderator from Ryujinx’s Discord previously noted the above message is all we know about Nintendo approaching the Ryujinx creator. Anything after that has been the words or speculation of others, including the former moderator, who later said the entire thing was a “threat.”
“This shouldn’t need saying, but apparently it does. gdkchan’s ‘agreement’ can’t have been in any way beneficial to him,” the moderator said prior to leaving the Discord server entirely. “This was clearly a threat. Thinking about it for any amount of time should have made that obvious. His efforts are behind the vast majority of the emulator’s greatest accomplishments, its entire existence in the first place, and a big part of most of those unreleased features posted above.”
It’s worth noting even if users split off or rehost alternate versions of Ryujinx, the result of this agreement shows Nintendo will likely shut down those forks or rehosts. This was the case for Yuzu, where its 8000+ forks or rehosts were all promptly shut down by Nintendo.
