A Twitter account seemingly dedicated to the Super Mario franchise’ 35th anniversary has been discovered, lending credence to rumors about upcoming games.
We previously reported on the rumors that to celebrate the Super Mario franchise’ 35th anniversary, there would be many new games and “high-definition remasters.”
These included remasters of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. The rumor also claimed there would be a “deluxe” version of Super Mario 3D World, and a new Paper Mario. “Most of Mario’s back catalogue will be remastered for Switch,” sources claimed, along with “several other Mario titles in 2020.”
Later, we heard claims that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy would be part of a “collection.” In addition, there were claims that the alleged new Paper Mario “represents a return to that franchise’s roots.”
A listing for Super Mario 3D World on Nintendo Switch appeared on Best Buy’s website, and Paper Mario: The Origami King was announced. While the game has turn-based RPG elements (unlike Super Paper Mario), there are other elements such as a puzzle-based battle system, and a focus on consumable special attacks and coins over experience points.
Now, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reports one of their readers (Júlio Rodrigo) has tipped them off over an alleged Twitter account dedicated to Super Mario franchise’ 35th anniversary. The account is protected at this time, with no images or posts. Under the name “aaaaaaaaaaa,” the username is @supermario35th.
The credibility comes from the recovery email addresses that VGC have obtained. While Twitter does not allow duplicate accounts under the same email address, the recovery email for this new account, as well as the ones for the Japanese Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Twitter accounts are very similar.
All three feature the redacted email of “ml***********************@n*******.**.**” The latter could easily be @nintendo.co.jp. However, it is also entirely possible the account created an email address that would mimic the letters we could see.
There is also a chance the screenshots have been falsified; to deceive VGC or individuals who would later send this information to VGC. However, VGC has been accurate with recent leaks. Using Forensically, none of the images appear to be altered.
We imagine for English speaking nations, the North American and European Nintendo Twitter accounts will be the main hub for news on these new Super Mario games. We will keep you informed as we learn more.
