Stellar Blade: BLOOD RAIN dev explains why protagonist looks so young

Stellar Blade: BLOOD RAIN

Instead of following Eve once again, Stellar Blade: BLOOD RAIN introduces players to Evie, a new protagonist tasked with hunting a dangerous terrorist organization known as Scarlet Sin.

The action moves away from the ruined landscapes of the original game and into a massive cyberpunk city inspired by locations across Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong.

According to director Hyung-tae Kim, Evie was intentionally designed to stand in contrast to Eve. She’s younger, smaller, and less physically imposing, but makes up for it with an aggressive personality and a brutal close-range fighting style.

“Yes. She is younger. She’s smaller in size. She’s shorter than Eve, but she has a stronger personality and engages in much tougher battles,” Kim said. “And she’s actually part of a special squad that chases after a group of terrorists who cause terror attacks here and there in the city.”

Her combat revolves around punches, grapples, rapid movement, and vicious melee attacks, giving encounters a different feel from what players experienced in the original Stellar Blade.

SHIFT UP also appears determined to place a greater emphasis on character development this time around. Kim explained that the team wanted Evie to have a stronger and more memorable personality, partly in response to feedback from players who wanted deeper characterization in the first game.

When asked about concerns regarding Evie’s young-looking design in a game with mature elements, Kim stated:

“If you actually play the game, you will not think that. I definitely like how Eve looked in the previous Stellar Blade. But this time, Evie, not just her physical looks, but her personality, the way she talks, the way she engages in battles, all that will combine together, and you’ll see that she’s a very lovable character.”

Beyond the action, Blood Rain will continue exploring the franchise’s larger themes surrounding humanity, artificial intelligence, and the consequences of technological advancement. While Evie’s exact connection to Eve remains a mystery, the developers have confirmed that the stories are closely linked.
