Starfield tops 12 million players, Phil Spencer hopeful for another Skyrim hit

Starfield

While sales figures are typically not shared by Microsoft anymore with Sony and Nintendo taking the lead, the publisher noted Starfield has topped 12 million players.

Starfield has been awesome,” Spencer said in his opening thoughts at CCPX 2023 on the latest from Bethesda Game Studios.

The Xbox boss went on to reveal that Starfield has topped 12 million players since launching in September this year, and shows now signs of slowing down.

Microsoft’s decision to reveal total players and not sales mostly stems from their heavy push for Game Pass, their wildly popular subscription platform where all Microsoft-owned or published games launch on the platform day of release.

“One of the special things about my job is that I get to play games very early in development,” Spencer said. “In fact, I was playing Starfield about this time last year, […] I could tell when I was playing and from the fact that I couldn’t stop playing–that this was probably gonna be a pretty special game.”

Other tidbits from Spencer on the sci-fi RPG include the fact that Starfield has become one of the “top ten most played games” from their studios. When asked if Starfield will become as big of a hit as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Spencer said “That’s our goal.”

Starfield is available now on Windows PC (via Steam) and Xbox Series X|S. Check out our review here!
