Soulcalibur VI is a Franchise Reboot, New Characters and Guest Characters Teased

The latest Famitsu (via Hachima) has revealed some more details for the recently announced Soulcalibur VI.

The news comes via an interview with game producer Motohiro Okubo, production producer Michinori Ozawa, and director Yoshiyuki Takahashi.

All three bosses confirmed the game’s keyword is “reboot,” meaning its a soft reboot of the entire franchise. The decision was made to revisit the events of the original Soulcalibur when they reviewed each game and how users played and reacted to each sequel. They wanted newcomers and hopefully series’ veterans to enjoy the game.

The game is a celebration of the series 20th anniversary, as well as a bid to fill the void in current generation gaming hardware that has no 3D weapon-based fighting games. Development is reportedly 70% complete, and they want to offer a tutorial mode, and hopefully a character creator mode (they said its a feature that cannot be removed, but they’re looking into it).

New characters will be included, and they will be integral to the story and related things, as the main story from the original game has many unfinished stories. They teased potential guest characters.

Key parts of the combat system including horizontal and vertical slashes, as well as other movements, haven’t changed. Movement and overall speed has been fine-tuned to further improve ease of play. The new Reversal Edge system that combines both defense and offense to respond to almost all abilities with a single button, as sort of a parry ability.

Critical Edges are also being made, with the command inputs being different than what you can find in Soulcalibur V. You can unleash them with a single button in the sixth game, with a focus on enjoyable sword combat via a single button as well. A “Soul Charge” system is being combined with the Critical Edge system so that you can power-up for a time by utilizing your gauge. Abilities that are exclusive to this new system are being made as well. Guard Impacts can be used without depleting this gauge.

A new “Lethal Hit” system is being developed for more advanced players – letting you perform new combos by landing certain abilities when certain criteria are met. These combos will unwind in slow motion and can even destroy your opponents equipment and armor. Examples like Mitsurugi’s armor being destroyed leaving him wearing only a loincloth, or Sophitia’s hair accessories being broken letting her hair down were given.

Soulcalibur VI is launching across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One sometime next year, worldwide.
