Some Content in Destiny 2 Now Locked Behind DLC

In the midst of a micro-transaction and lootbox debacle plaguing the gaming industry, it seems like other developers are trying to gate off content players had access to in games they already own.

Now that Bungie and Activision have released the first expansion for Destiny 2, titled “Curse of Osiris,” the game has now seen content locked away behind a paywall with the new DLC.

The new expansion’s launch has effectively gated off many of the in-game activities, essentially forcing users with just the base game to pony up or literally have portions of the game now cut off.

Previously, end-game content requirements were at higher power levels for the base game – now you need the expansion and an even higher power level to access the same content like the raid and the Nightfall strike, hard mode content, and the like.

Bungie previously did this sort of thing back in 2014 with the Destiny 1 expansion pack, The Dark Below. Since then, anyone still playing the game or now its sequel have come to expect needing all the DLC to get full access to all in-game content.

We’ll update this story as it develops.

Destiny 2 and its new Curse of Osiris expansion are both available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

This is what they did last time, so I fail to see how this is surprising or news. Isn’t this the model of all MMOs anyway?

I mean is anybody surprised by this? It’s a “Triple AAA” puplisher and one of 3 Hell Rider ( EA, WB and Activision-Blizzard ), that is normal in today’s big games. Pre-Order, 10 Diffrent Versions, Season Passes, DLC, Microtransactions, Loot Boxes aka Gambling and game mechanics to press even the last Dollar Euro or whatever out of you ( manipulation of your mind ) through insane unfun and unfair gameplay oh hello Pay2Win Battlefront.

Thats why I always wait for the Complete Edition and stick to games that have not of this Bullshit in it.

I actually never knew about this until now.

Bungie has gotten a lot of flak about Destiny 2 (a ton of it deserved), but this just reads like you don’t actually play games. This is the model for many MMOs going back years and years. Beyond that, how is this a surprise at all when it was announced this was going to be how it was before the game even launched? It’s why I bought the edition of the game I did for $10 extra with the expansions included.

I mean all MMO expansions do this, don’t they? I think this one was announced a while back. The season pass that includes this expansion was announced before the game launched (figures).

Final Fantasy XIV at least allows players access to all of the content of the expansion they’ve paid for without locking anything new out. I can’t speak to the shitshow that is WoW or any other MMO, however.

I really don’t see how this is any different to expansions in other MMOs, such as WoW and Guild Wars 2. Are you trying to insinuate something with weird wording?

I misunderstood the article. If some raid required max level and now the max level cannot be achieved without the expansion and you are essentially locked out that’s really scummy.

Oh, okay. So it’s a non issue, then.

You can’t scam a player base that doesn’t exist.

Not exactly. The equivalent here would be a MMO launching with a raid zone for level 50 characters only. When they put out the expansion that raises the cap to level 60, they also went back and changed the raid zone to require level 60 instead — anyone who was at 50 and didn’t buy in can no longer play that content they could a week ago.

Yeah, I misunderstood the article. This is pretty shitty.

DLC will DLC. A bigger issue is players being locked out of content because there are no LFG or matchmaking tools for high level strikes/raids and you need a separate app to chat with your own fucking clanmates.

Just another example of console pleb fucktardery ruining an otherwise acceptable PC release.

So let me get this straight.
Your DLC has so little content to it that it’s questionable to even pay the price they want for it.
The DLC raises the level cap.
The old end game content had it’s requirements to access hiked up so you now need the DLC to play old content you had with the base game since release.

Is this seriously the season of developers trying to one-up eachother in fantastically shitty ways to bleed money?

Content that was previously accessible to people with the base game, is no longer accessible unless you have the dlc.

I don’t know of other games that do this to be honest.

Other MMO’s cut off content that players previously had access to when a new expansion was released? Cause that’s what is happening.

For a time I considered trying Destiny 2 when it fully released, but this is the final nail in the coffin for my interest. There are dozens of other nails I was willing to try to overlook but this kind of thing needs to be punished.

This is not the model for any MMO. No MMO (to my knowledge, having played dozens of them for months and years) has ever had rebalanced or cut content to only be accessed with an expansion pack that it wasn’t part of.

I have no sympathy for the idiots who purchased into such a flawed product void of an artists touch. Same goes for those who purchased Battlefront 2, or any AAA game published and developed with companies with a history of fucking over the consumers just like this.
