Microsoft Confirms Scalebound is Cancelled

Scalebound is Cancelled

Following initial rumors and delays, Microsoft has confirmed that the PlatinumGames’ developed dragon game Scalebound is cancelled.

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences.”

While Microsoft has confirmed Scalebound is cancelled, previously, a rumor pointing to the PlatinumGames’ Xbox One and PC action RPG Scalebound experiencing further development woes, and possibly even getting canned.

The rumor (via Kotaku) is citing “several sources” close to the project saying the game is stuck in development hell, and might be cancelled. When they reached out to Microsoft, they said, “We’ll have more to share on Scalebound soon.”

Platinum Games have been developing or co-developing a lot of games recently, with their latest opus being NieR: Automata, a co-developed action RPG with Square Enix.

On the other hand, the game has been experiencing development issues for quite some time, having been announced back at E3 2014. We haven’t gotten an official update from Microsoft in months, and the company’s recent Xbox Wire post doesn’t even mention the game.

The hype for the game kinda got killed for me the moment i saw the main protagonist. Game needed a more darker overtone instead of the douchebag they made him out to be.

I do have to say it’s a shame considering the amount of development time this game had.

I don’t know what’s microsoft’s deal is this gen but they are good at wasting money on dead end projects and flops. Fable legends, phantom dust 2… and flops like quantum break, sunset overdrive, recore, titan fall 1 why would anyone want to work for microsoft anymore.

The Xb1 has just as many big AAA games as the PS4 console exclusive or not. The PS4 exclusive games library is ridiculously over-hyped for what it really is.

That assumes you don’t count all the Japanese imports. The Western exclusives on both consoles are fairly the same, but the PS consoles always have the more varied option from imports.

This game likely would have bombed on the Xbox One.

We don’t know anything about the situation, but in the end it will be bad PR for both Platinum and MS.

If a situation like what you described actually happened, the cancellation will be on Kamiya, since MS is funding the project and they are refusing to implement it per spec.

We know enough. Rumors about development issues have been going around since the game was delayed last year. Kamiya was already clearly unhappy with development by that point.

I think it’s safe to say that Microsoft tried dictating what Platinum could and couldn’t do with the game.

yo that is freaking crazy, I just woke up to this.. The only reason I say is that because I played Bayo2 on the WiiU and loved it and put Platinum as one of the developers in ym list of people to watch out for. When they announced scalebound I was hyped then derailed due to being a Xbox One exclusive. Though I was never gonna buy a console for a game or really like any of microsoft’s consoles(just their pcs lol). Anyways I would figure I would play it on my cousin’s console at some point as I was starting to like what I saw from the game.. but then something hit the fan during the development cycle and halted progress. Still crazy that microsoft had at least a somewhat unique exclusive game in their line up.. LOL I just can’t… I don’t know if I should be let down or laught at this.. so conflicting. Anyways there goes another vaporware game…

The aesthetics of this game are corny as hell, I doubt it would have sold well even if it wasn’t an Xbox exclusive. The most interesting news coming out of this to me is that line Eurogamer had [“Work on the game took a serious knock last autumn, Eurogamer sources
say, when several senior members of the development team were forced to
take a month away from the pressure of the project’s heavy workload.”] I wonder if that’s the same reason why so many “big” Japanese titles like Street Fighter V feel so incomplete.

Oh well, that sucks.. I was looking forward to playing this on my PC. Matter of fact, why not bring it or give to Sony as well as the NSwitch instead and also putting it on PC, since MS doesn’t seem to want it for their X1 and Windows Store. What I want to know is the true reason from Kamiya’s mouth; does MS want to add some sort of Microtransaction BS or it needed guns or what??

Also that “amazing lineup of games” is WEAKER than Playstation’s lineup last year, like they’re all sequels except for Sea of Thieves. While this cancellation may leave a bad mark on Platinum Games track record but since SB is cancelled, their focus is going to shift completely over to Nier.

Aww sh1+ my man, didn’t mean to come off that way. No I don’t mind PC players getting more games either. It just dumb that these developers say exclusive and it ends up in other places as well. They should say timed exclusive or whatever. And I get why do this now… So they can squeeze the most money from the console version and later get more from the pc ports. Now if they announced it was a timed exclusive I can see people would wait more for the pc ports and they wouldn’t really make as much sales from the console versions. Still if a game is coming to pc I would like to know so I don’t buy the console version.. but I guess it can’t be fair like that lol

Never buy a console for a game that isn’t out yet.

Still, I think the Xbone is a good value thanks to a good lineup of “free” games every month on Gold (much better than the indie crap selection on the PSN+) as well as due to the EA Access thing. But that is only if you don’t have a focus on PC gaming, since stuff on the Xbone is usually multiplat.

  130. Didney Worl

    January 9, 2017 at 9:51 pm

I’m not counting multiplats, just exclusives. And as far as exclusives go, the Xbone is a barren wasteland compared to the PS4 and Wii U.

These are all of the games I own for the system:
    Dead Rising 3
    Gears of War Definitive Edition
    Gears of War 4
    Killer Instinct Definitive Edition
Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition
    Rare Replay
    Recore
    Sunset Overdrive

The only other game I still need to get is Quantum Break, that would bring me to 10 physical games. Now, let’s remove GoW Definitive and Rare Replay from the list since one is a remaster and the other is a retro compilation. That would bring me down to only 8 games. I don’t like the fact that I paid $300 for a system that only had 8 games I had any interest in playing. That was my mistake, and going forward, I will avoid making that same mistake again.

It sounds like the decision might be mutual then, Kamiya might have finally had it with them and quite.

It certainly wouldn’t surprise me. Kamiya isn’t known for holding his temper, and this wouldn’t be the first time Microsoft allegedly drove away developers. They’re supposedly the reason Rare split up after Nuts ‘n Bolts.
