Rumor: Devil May Cry 5 Planned as a True Sequel, Itsuno Directing, Single-Player Only, Returning Cast Confirmed, More

After lots of rumors, resume postings, and even teases from developers that have worked on previous titles in the series, a big juice new rumor is pointing toward Devil May Cry 5 being a real thing.

According to the source(s), Devil May Cry 5 is real and is the new project from Devil May Cry director Hideaki Itsuno (who took on directing the games after creator Hideki Kamiya). A full reveal was planned for this year’s PlayStation Experience, however the source(s) note they pushed the reveal back to next year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo to help bulk up Sony’s presser.

Reportedly, the game will have multiple playable protagonists, with Rueben Langdon returning as Dante, Johnny Young Bosch returning as Nero, and Dan Southworth returning as Vergil. Itsuno’s team from the previous Devil May Cry titles and Dragon’s Dogma have been working on the game. The game is planned as a single-player only title with some “online integration.”

Internally the game is actually titled Devil May Cry V, instead of the standard numeric system naming scheme the previous games used. Some form of PlayStation exclusivity is involved, and if true, the game will probably release for PC and PlayStation 4 (if Sony’s recent ‘console exclusives’ are anything to go by).

This is a direct reposting of the various bits from their rumor:

  • The game is slated to release some time in the fiscal calendar year of 2019. That means sometime between April 2018 and March 2019. Original plan was to release it in November 2018 but the date MIGHT have been pushed back to early 2019.
  • Originally DMCV was intended to be announced at PSX but after receiving feedback on their E3 press conference, Sony decided to scale back on PSX and instead scale up E3 2018. DMCV was an unfortunate casualty of this choice and thus it’s unlikely that DMCV gets officially revealed in 2017.
  • There will be a demo for the game sometime before release.
  • Game has been in development for 2 years as of today. When it will release it will have been in development for 3 years at least. That is actually the highest time a DMC game has been in full production for. Pre-production started as early as 2015 around the time that DMC4SE finished releasing. There have been no development hiccups and as stated, the development has in fact been progressing smoothly.
  • There is some form of Playstation exclusivity involved. Sony is paying for some of the funding for the game but the extent of it is not known. Could be completely PS4 exclusive, console exclusive or timed exclusive. If the game is announced publicly then it will be at a Sony event, which is why many people thought that it was going to be at PSX.
  • Trailer has been ready for a while now. The initial trailer is 1 minute 50 seconds long (they may add new cuts to trailer to make an extended version since some time has passed from when it was made). It is mostly focused on story, characters and cutscenes. A city like setting is shown in the trailer not that different from Fortuna city in DMC4.
  • The overall game is supposed to be “ambitious” for a DMC title with a broader appeal.
  • Longest cutscene runtime of any DMC game yet.

  • Itsuno’s team that worked on previous DMC games and Dragon’s Dogma is working on DMCV.
  • Yuji Shimomura is returning as the cutscene director for DMCV. He worked on DMC3, DMC4 and Bayonetta cutscenes.
  • Rueben Langdon is reprising his role as Dante.
  • Johnny Young Bosch is reprising his role as Nero.
  • Dan Southworth is reprising his role as Vergil.
  • No word on the actresses who played Trish and Lady if they will be returning,
  • Onyay Pheori is helping with the soundtrack (she did the song for DMC4SE’s launch trailer).

  • DMCV picks up the story after DMC4.
  • More than one playable character in the game, Dante is for sure playable and Nero is possibly playable as well. Up to 3 playable characters have been suggested for now.
  • This is the most serious Dante has been (a “new side” of Dante), of course not counting DMC2. Dante still plays with his enemies and has his usual over the top flair but this game is going to be more personal for him.
  • A third character is expected to be playable as well. Said to be “very powerful.” May or may not be brand new to the series.
  • No word on whether Vergil is playable or not, he will be returning although specifics on how he is returning from his death in DMC1 are unknown.
  • Trish has a prominent role to play in DMCV but no word on whether she is playable or not.
  • There will be a sequence where Nero and Vergil have a confrontation, confirming their relationship (Nero is in fact Vergil’s son as stated in the DMC3142 artbook).
  • Characters switch during key story points in the game.
  • The “Prince of Darkness” is featured as the main antagonist of the story. (Prince of Darkness title normally refers to Mundus so it might indicate his return but that title may have transferred to another character)
  • DMCV might be the end of the “sons of Sparda” storyline.

  • Hard lock on is standard.
  • Console is targeted for 60 frames per second like the previous DMC games.
  • Level design is more open than previous DMC games but not going into Souls or open world territory of level design. Movement outside of combat has been streamlined to match the open nature of the game. The structure is more open to make the experience more “smooth.” Immersion is important to the team with this game.
  • Level design and exploration is more similar to Bayonetta with action set pieces thrown in there but without the QTEs. QTEs in general do not exist in DMCV thus far.
  • There is NO Stamina bar.
  • This is not a Musou game but there will be encounters where you are facing more enemies than you are used to in a DMC game.
  • There is some online integration but definitely no multiplayer PvP.
  • Dodge system is reworked and dodging in general is supposed to be a lot smoother than before (get ready to hear the word “smooth” a lot when related to DMCV).
  • Camera pulls back during big fights. The devs are really proud of the new, more dynamic camera system.
  • Animations are being improved to be less stiff. Big emphasis on cloth physics (maybe Dante’s sword might not clip through his jacket now!). Battles are beautifully animated and smooth.
  • Mission and Ranking system similar to previous DMC games and Bayonetta. There will definitely be mission/chapter selects.
  • Bosses being ramped up dramatically in DMCV. One of the boss fights moves between multiple areas of the game.
  • Style system is in for Dante – Enemies will react a bit differently to each style.
  • Style system has been streamlined to be smoother to use for the players (speculated that the style system might be tuned/reworked to make it easier to get into than in DMC4).
  • Certain styles will have advantages on certain enemies similar to DmC/DMC3 (you can use a single style on any enemy just fine).
  • More environment interactivity than any previous DMC game. This is supposed to compliment the combat system, not detract from it.
  • There is some form of dynamic environment destruction/transformation in play but not on the scale of DmC thus far.
  • While this is not an open world game, some inspirations have been taken from Dragon’s Dogma.

The new rumor comes via ResetEra, a new forum that sprung up after the NeoGAF owner fiasco, so it’s probably worth taking any credibility to the rumor with a hefty grain of salt. Still, the possibilities! The time has come, and so have I.

How do you feel about the possibility of a true Devil May Cry sequel? With Hideaki Itsuno at the helm? Sound off in the comments below!

DMC5 is the only game I’m looking forward to from Capcom and I’m a bit worried that they’ll mess it up. This leak is oddly specific and I take it with a massive grain of salt, but I might as well address what’s in it.

The “broader appeal” is a massive red flag. I hope this doesn’t mean watering down the combat and toning down the difficulty for the more mainstream audience. Same goes for the more open level design. I do hope this doesn’t mean choosing where to go, because that doesn’t fit all that well in DMC.

Not sure why they mentioned that there is no stamina bar. This was never in DMC games, so I don’t see why it would be in the new one. With the previous Dark Souls comparison it puts the leak into question.

I’m OK with Nero returning. His fighting style is quite unique and more hands on (pun intended).

Serious Dante is not a good idea. DMC2 is a good testament to that. Dante had serious moments in the previous games, but overall he was a glorified Ninja Turtle.

The length of the cutscenes is a toss up. On one hand this could mean that the game is long with any cool battles and situations, but on the other it could mean Nero screaming “KYRIEEEEEE!” for 2 hours.

“Online integration” and Capcom are a bad combination. DMC doesn’t need an online component of any kind, which leaves me worried of what it could be.

Not showing the supposed story trailer at PSX is a strange decision. They could reserve a
gameplay demonstration for E3 2018. Despite its success DMC appeals to a niche, so PSX would be a great place for the reveal.

The 3-4 year development time really caught my eye. DMC4 got royally screwed by it’s rushed development. Now we might finally get a sequel that surpasses the legendary DMC3.

But damn, if this is true, then it means we won’t get an official reveal until June of next year.

I’m gonna assume Nero is not gonna cry this time (kinda like how Leon and Raiden stopped being whiners). And if the third guy isn’t Vergil or Sparda, it’s a new character because Trish and Lady aren’t what I call very powerful. This is if any of all this is true. Pretty believable though.

They already made the mistake of appealing to a bigger audience with DmC, they can’t be that stupid to do it again. The open level design thing might be true since it’s hard to sell a game without the open world meme nowadays.

All I care about at this point is getting a combat system that surpasses DMC 3. If Nero is added I hope they actually give him some actual depth with actual styles (he was vastly outclassed by Dante in 4 and Vergil and Dante in 4 SE). I’d welcome an actual practice mode similar to Virtua Fighter IV in DMC 5 only tailored to DMC. Then again I’ll take this rumor with a grain of salt.

  71. TheJerminator15

Of the current generation it is. PS4 has shipped 60 million units according to statistics, Xbox One has shipped 15-30 million. The install bases for the PS4 are significantly higher than any other console platform this generation.

  72. Travis Touchdown
    Travis Touchdown

Switch is going to rape it too. This is, of course, not taking quality into the equation, in which the Wii U came out on top as well.

There is nothing that the PS4 ‘defeated’ this generation.

  73. TheJerminator15
    November 30, 2017 at 10:28 am

I never said it “defeated” anything. You said it wasn’t relevant and that Sony was struggling to keep it so, which was demonstratably false considering it’s the home console with the biggest install base this generation.

The 3DS launched in the 7th generation of consoles, two or three years before PS4. Despite that, the 3DS has sales figures of 68.98 million compared with PS4’s 67.5 million. It has just over a million more units sold despite having had a couple more years on the market. And given that the Switch is basically cannibalizing the 3DS market by offering a hybridised system and Christmas right around the corner the PS4 is likely to overtake the 3DS by the fiscal year.

Of consoles launched this generation, as of right now, the PS4 is the biggest platform.

Quality of the games wasn’t part of your original point. Even if it was, whilst the Wii U had some very good games, but so does the PS4 and even Xbone. Persona, Nier, Nioh for example. Nier on its own is helping to further push the agenda that games can be considered art in many circles, I’d say that is a quality game.

Switch may very well beat it in sales by the end of the generation. I actually hope it does, it’s a brilliant system.

  74. The Clansman
    The Clansman
    November 30, 2017 at 11:27 am

The problem is that out of those 70 million only a very small fraction are actually buying games. See how indie games sell better on the Switch, games like Bloodbhorne can’t even reach 3 millions. Almost all PS4 users are either using it as a Netflix machine or use it just to play CoD and FIFA. And developers are actually seeing that, 70 million of those users it’s worth nothing for a japanese developer, that’s why they’re starting porting to either PC, Switch, or both.

3ds is a last gen system, wii U sold 15 consoles total and no one liked anything on it but wonderful 101 and bayo 2.

Don’t get too worried about Clan and Travis, they’re just a pair of butthurt gay nerds who are upset that no one bought the Wii U because the wii was shit.

I dunno man, you say that but as an employee at a major game chain store, the numbers don’t match your claims, at least comparatively the ps4 sells more games than either of it’s current competitors (switch, xbone), We sold, maybe 10 switch games last week, during the busiest shopping day of the season, and I don’t even want to try and count the number of games we sold for ps4. I think you’re in denial of reality because you’re too hung up on playing favorites with your consoles, like a 12 year old kid on the playground. Switch is good, ps4 is good, xbone is kinda crap but if that’s your thing whatever enjoy it, But at the end of the day, the ps4 is outselling the switch by leaps and bounds, in both games and systems.
