Rich and Famous is getting an HD remaster

Rich and Famous

Eureka Entertainment has announced they’re prepping a high-definition blu-ray release for Rich and Famous, Taylor Wong’s cult classic gangster action flick.

Details on the high-definition transfer are scant but a release is set for sometime in early 2023, via a new blu-ray disc release.

The 1987 film has only been available in standard definition via DVD and select streaming services, so a full high-definition remaster will be much welcome to Hong Kong gangster film enthusiasts.

Set in 60s-70s Hong Kong, the story focuses on two boys who aren’t related yet grow up as brothers: Kwok (Andy Lau) and Yung (Alex Man). Both youngsters join powerful gangster Li Ah Chai’s (Chow Yun-fat) gang and rise up through the ranks.

While Yung is the older brother, he’s always getting into trouble and when he accrues debt at the local gambling hall – gangsters threaten to punish him. Thus begins their descent into a life of crime between rival gang lords.

Here’s a blurb on Rich and Famous:

International superstar Chow Yun-fat (The Killer, Hard-Boiled) heads an all-star cast in this Godfather-like two part gangster epic (to be continued in Tragic Hero). By enlisting the help of triad leader Lee Ah-Chai (Chow) in settling a gambling debt, two brothers Yung and Kwok (Alex Man and Andy Lau) now find themselves in the middle of a power struggle between Chai and his ominous nemesis. They reluctantly join Chai as the war escalates, leading to a shocking betrayal and the inevitable, bloody showdown. With plenty of shootouts, superb performances from Hong Kong’s top stars, and Chow’s legendary charisma, Rich And Famous is a fabulous combination of compelling drama and dazzling action.

Hopefully this means even more classic HK films with Chow Yun-fat will get remastered, most especially Rich and Famous’ direct sequel, the 1987 conclusion film Tragic Hero.
