Recommended Specs for Oculus Rift are Confirmed

Oculus VR has finally given us the first official recommended specifications to run the headset on a PC.

According to the company, to get the “full Rift experience,” the following specs are recommended:

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output (required)
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports (required)
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer (required)

“The goal is for all Rift games and applications to deliver a great experience on this configuration,” said Atman Binstock, chief architect for Oculus. “Ultimately, we believe this will be fundamental to VR’s success, as developers can optimize and tune their game for a known specification, consistently achieving presence and simplifying development.”

Binstock continued by talking up the consumer version’s various display resolutions: “On the raw rendering costs: a traditional 1080p game at 60Hz requires 124 million shaded pixels per second. In contrast, the Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, consuming 233 million pixels per second.”

“At the default eye-target scale, the Rift’s rendering requirements go much higher: around 400 million shaded pixels per second. This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering.”

    Need a slight GPU upgrade then. I’m planning to upgrade sometime next year anyway *Edit* Though I assume that the specs are for reference cards so my 280X will work just fine since it’s better than a 290

    So not very many people will have that graphics card then only just got a Computer with a GTX 780 last year.

    Excellent, that’s almost exactly the PC I built several months ago. And good to know they upped the Rift’s resolution to match the Valve/HTC Vive; this way it’ll come down to how each handles the little things.

    Those are fairly strenuous requirements. I literally only got around to installing a 290 two weeks ago.

    These requirements are surprisingly low from a hardware perspective, all things considered; especially taking into account all the years they want it to be the baseline for. Windows-only does bother me quite a bit, though, as many games are coming to Linux nowadays. DX11 only, it seems.
    The only real sticking point to me is that laptops in which integrated graphics bridge the dedicated one and the display itself can’t power it at all. Future ones will surely beat the requirements, so it’s quite a hurdle.

    Welp, that killed my interest in upgrading this year. Best wait til its out to get my hardware.
