Patapon successor RATATAN gets first gameplay trailer and details

RATATAN

Developer Ratatan Arts have shared the debut gameplay trailer for RATATAN, their recently-announced Patapon spiritual successor.

A crowdfunding campaign is planned for the game via Kickstarter, which is set to kick off on August 1st.

As confirmed in our original report, key staff include: Hiroyuki Kotani (main designer on Patapon), Nelnal as main artist, Ken Adachi on music (Patapon and LocoRoco composer), and Kazuto Sakajiri as producer.

Here’s a rundown on the game, plus the new gameplay trailer:

What is RATATAN?

RATATAN is a rhythm action game in which the player takes the role of a conductor called “Ratatan” and controls a kawaii army by making full use of “rhythm commands,” which are triggered by combining four phrases played by the instruments in hand.

In addition to the four-beat attack and defense rhythm commands, this title features new action elements that allow the player to move freely and new characters with unique instruments and skills, evolving the musicality that is the theme of this title into a more enjoyable play experience.

Ratatan Cast in the Trailer

  • Fortran (Tomokazu Sugita)
  • Harigittan (Hika Tsukishiro)
  • Nyandler (Haruna Yuzuki)
  • Mimizukkun (Yohei Azaue)
  • Kerorompa (Katsuya Fukunishi)

Game System

Ratatans are music-loving heroes given life by the power of Medama, and look like animals that once lived on a planet called Redo.

Ratatans have individual instruments and skills and abilities that allow them to take advantage of rhythm battles by singing and playing instruments.

For example, Kerorompa, a support-type character, uses a megaphone to boost the morale of his troops and stir up the enemy to incite the battlefield. And the defensive character, Harigittan, builds forts to protect his comrades with his numbing guitar riffs.

Kickstarter Campaign

The Kickstarter campaign features a variety of stretch goals to expand game content, including new systems, additional mini-games, and more. If the goal is met, the game will be released on PC and the latest home consoles, and will utilize TVT’s own multiplayer-focused Theory Engine for stable and scalable multiplayer.
