Sony has revealed PS5 has reached over 20 millions units sold worldwide.

With its initial launch back in November 2020, this means the PS5 has managed to accomplish this feat in roughly 18 months.

“We are thrilled to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally,” Veronica Rogers, SVP, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment said (via GamesIndustry.biz).

She added, “Since PS5’s launch, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over and we want to take this time to thank the fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and what inspires us to innovate new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue creating the best place to play.”

According to Sony, they also expect to ramp up production for the PS5 to assure those who don’t currently own the system they will have a chance to obtain one.

Previously they had increased production for the PS4 in response to continuing shortages of their current generation console.

The console has been in high demand since it’s release. There have also been struggles to stock the system as shortages have occurred due to multiple factors globally.

Also while it is an impressive feat to have sold as many console as they have during this time period, the PS5 was surprisingly outsold by the Xbox Series S in Japan for a short time, likely due to a mix of supply constraints and other factors.
