With the increasing number of companies putting themselves out there to be acquired, such as EA or Ubisoft, Sony has positioned itself to be a potential buyer for their PlayStation brand.
Sony president and CEO Jim Ryan spoke on this matter in a Q&A after their business segments briefing.
“In terms of future M&A activity, the answer to that is we are not at all finished with our strategy of trying to grow PlayStation Studios inorganically,” Ryan said in the earnings Q&A (via VGC).
He added, “As we transition from our historic game development strategy to a much broader and much wider market reach than we enjoy today, it is very likely that inorganic stimulus will be required to help us to realise these dreams.”
“And to the extent that potential targets fit with our strategy, to the extent that potential targets allow us to accelerate the way in which we are able to deliver on our strategy, we will certainly consider further M&A activity to add to our business portfolio.”
Sony has already acquired Bungie earlier this year. In fact, Sony has acquired 5 other studios in the fiscal year which ended on March 2022.
Meanwhile, they’ve also invested in other companies such as Discord, Devolver Digital, and live service game platform AccelByte. Though in the briefing, these and their investment into Epic Games are not counted among their figures of acquisitions.
It’s currently unknown what other companies Sony may have their sights set on acquiring for the PlayStation brand. Though there have been some rumors of them potentially going for Square Enix, who recently shed from value in their selling of Crystal Dynamics and other IPs.
What do you think? Are there any companies in mind that you believe Sony has a real shot in deciding to acquire?
