No Voice Chat for Splatoon, Because the Online Shooter Community is Filled with Negativity

The online multiplayer community is generally known for its absurdity and sometimes hostility, especially to newcomers in a game with an existing and experienced community. This has apparently been something the developers working on Splatoon have noticed, and it has affected the game’s online multiplayer.

We’ve learned from EDGE magazine (via NeoGAF) that Splatoon will not have online voice chat. However, co-director Yusuke Amano is clearly a fan of shooting games, but when inviting friends to play online, they would run into hostility:

“This is coming from personal experience. When I played online games, I didn’t like the negativity I got and people telling me ‘You’re crap. Go away’. So we wanted to focus on the positive aspects of online gaming”

Coming from this, Amano confirmed to EDGE that Splatoon “has no voice chat and never will.” Amano reportedly wants to bring in new players, but he does make a note of saying chatting in an online game can add to the fun. Amano wants to make Splatoon a game that even people who aren’t fans of “traditional shooters” can play.

What do you guys think? Is the online gaming community that hostile to new players? Is the negativity relegated to mostly shooters? Sound off in the comments below!
