Nintendo has FINALLY announced the Nintendo Switch 2 following months of speculation, alleged leaks, and other drama.
While Nintendo is largely known for shaking up the console market with their creative ideas (Motion controls, screen controllers, etc). For the first time in a while, Nintendo is releasing a direct upgrade to their last console.
Some may consider this lack of inventiveness a bad thing, but Nintendo clearly has the wisdom to stick with what works. The new console features a bigger display, bigger joycons for more comfortable gaming, and a kickstand (which I understand is a big deal for some people?).
The first hands-on chances to play the Switch 2 will be held worldwide via Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events. Here’s a schedule:
North America:
- New York, April 4-6, 2025
- Los Angeles, April 11-13, 2025
- Dallas, April 25-27, 2025

You can check out the announcement below with a surprise at the end (no it’s not a new Super Smash Bros).
Perhaps what’s most important is that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature backwards compatibility with the original Switch with few exceptions which haven’t been named yet.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to release sometime this year, with a console-focused Nintendo Direct planned for April 2.
