Nintendo Files New Trademark for Eternal Darkness Prior to January 12 Event

Nintendo has filed a new trademark for Eternal Darkness, roughly a week from their planned unveiling event for the Nintendo Switch console.

While Nintendo has attempted to re-file this mark over the years to avoid the trademark being abandoned, the most recent time they’ve been awarded this mark was on December 20th of last year.

Released for the Nintendo GameCube back in 2002, the game became a cult classic and helped raise the bar for psychological and horror games. The game’s progenitor, Denis Dyack, moved on to create a spiritual successor named Shadow of the Eternals, which he still plans to fully release.

This is pure speculation here, but perhaps Nintendo has some kind of HD port of the game planned for the Nintendo Switch? We’ll find out next week.

The January 12th event will go down at 8PM Pacific / 11PM Eastern, and will be livestreamed via Nintendo.com. During the event we’ll get information like pricing, hardware specs, and the console’s launch roster of games.

Probably just for the Virtual Console.

Okay but will it be censored?

Nintendo has been renewing it for a long time and every time it happens more speculation and nothing.

Last time around Nintendo needed to show the government proof they were going to use it.

Either virtual console or a remaster for the Switch.

Virtual console. Nintendo is going to dick ride that because they have nothing else to offer. If they’re going to dick ride the virtual console though, they should have gotten Rogue Squadron 2 on it.

Sadly, it’ll just be a virtual console game. Unless of course, they totally shock the world and release a sequel. Not that I’d might that at all… But it won’t happen.

What if it’s Shadow of the Eternals rebranded as an Eternal Darkness reboot?

On one hand, Denis Dyack. On the other, if I recall correctly, part of the reason Eternal Darkness was so great was Nintendo held Silicon Knights by the balls as the game was getting made… So maybe it could still work out.

Sadly that also means there is a chance NoA will have a lot of input on it. Can only imagine…

If Nintendo offered more games like this in addition to their kid friendly library, and had a normal console, they’d be doing insanely well. Instead we have the cancer to the industry that they currently are.

It’s probably not even that. They’ve been renewing it awhile now. Most likely so none of their competitors get to it.

Highly unlikely. :p I mean, I know the Treehouse gets a lot of shit (some of it deserving) but they wouldn’t fuck up Eternal Darkness.

Nintendo is doing insanely well, despite your blubbering. The Switch is set to be the final nail in the coffin for Playstation and Xbox, as it’s a console designed to appeal to the working adult… their core market.

Without that market, Xbox and Playstation is done with.

Probably just a VC release. But the game is a classic. A lot better than any of those slow, boring, Silent Hill games.

Sounds about right. They will resurrect a franchise no one cares about that sold on a system not many people bought instead of making a new Metroid.
