Nintendo avoids answering backwards compatibility questions from shareholders

While there are no apparent plans for a Nintendo Switch successor before April 2024, that doesn’t mean that people can’t have questions about upcoming hardware from Nintendo.

A recent shareholder meeting with the company did have such important questions that are likely on many gamers’ minds: like the major topic of backwards compatibility.

One shareholder even stated that it would be “disheartening” if the follow-up console to the Switch didn’t have backwards compatibility for games purchased digitally on the Switch.

“We are always considering various things about the specifications of future hardware,” Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said (via VGC). “But at this stage, I would like to refrain from making any specific comments about future hardware.”

Unfortunately his response didn’t confirm nor deny what will ultimately happen when new hardware does arrive. In fairness, there’s likely a lot of things that still need to be finalized given the console won’t be out for at least another full year.

However, he did state that the company hopes to have a smooth transition for customers when migrating their Nintendo accounts to this new console.

The Switch has been available worldwide since March 2017, and the newer OLED Nintendo Switch has been available since October 2021.
