Publisher Improbable and developer Inflexion Games, a studio made up of ex-BioWare devs have revealed their debut title, Victorian-era survival/crafting game Nightingale.
Nightingale is described as a shared-world, survival crafting game with a Victorian gaslamp fantasy theme. I had to look up what gaslamp fantasy was before writing this article, and I’m still not quite sure it’s unique enough to be considered separate from steampunk, but I digress.
The game is being helmed by former BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn, who left BioWare back in 2017, only to join Improbable a year later. What eventually became Nightingale is the result of the past three years of development on the ambitious title.
I suppose the keyboard warriors will argue that gaslamp is a subgenre that is more focused on the supernatural and not the “super-science” found in steampunk. This makes sense considering Nightingale has you fighting a supernatural and otherworldly threat, the fae. I still refuse to acknowledge that this is an actual sub-genre.
Nightingale is set to launch sometime in 2022 via Steam Early Access.
