NieR series creator Taro Yoko has made it abundantly clear he will keep working on the series – and he possibly teased the latest game at a recent concert.
Yoko made an appearance at the Nier: Orchestra Concert in London this month, where the beloved creator invited fans to applaud as loudly as possible to assure Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu a sequel is direly wanted.
The Square Enix president was reportedly (via ResetEra) at the event – and after Yoko’s plea the majority of the audience erupted in cheers and applauding, making it very clear fans want more NieR.
Here’s where things get interesting: at one point during the show the word “REPENT” was reportedly shown as part of some piece of dialogue, with the final appearance of the word being spelled as “R3PENT.” The number 3 is an obvious tease at a third mainline NieR game.
The latest release in the NieR series was the Switch port for Nier: Automata, which got subtitled The End of Yorha Edition, back in 2022.
Most recently, however, Chinese gaming giant Tencent reportedly cancelled an unannounced NieR series spinoff, albeit for smartphone devices, nearly 2 years into its development.
The giant publisher reportedly couldn’t find a way to monetize the mobile title – while traditional releases in the series continue to sell well – NieR: Automata just passed 8 million copies sold.
