New Yakuza Game in Development at Sega

We’ve learned a new Yakuza game is in the works, following the release of Yakuza 6 in Japan.

The news comes via Famitsu, who recently hosted the Famitsu Awards 2016 event. Series general director Toshihiro Nagoshi confirmed a new game, or possibly multiple new games for the series, after Yakuza 6 won an Excellence Award from Famitsu.

He revealed that he’s already working on the next game, and that as the title is still a bit early in development, he’ll be able to talk about it in the future. He noted that as the Dragon Engine was created with Yakuza 6, the engine should be completed alongside the next game or two.

Nagoshi said that he doesn’t want to be held down to confirming just one title, rather it could be multiple games. He noted that since Yakuza 6 is described as the final chapter for series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, they won’t suddenly go “we were just kidding!” or something like that.

The latest game in the series to get a western release, Yakuza Kiwami, is launching on August 29th in both North America and Europe. Yakuza 6 has a western release planned as well, however we’re not expecting that until 2018. In case you missed it, you can find our thorough written and video review for the latest game to be released in the west, Yakuza 0 here (we highly recommend it!).
