New Vanillaware Game Development Confirmed by George Kamitani

New Vanillaware Game

Director George Kamitani has confirmed the development of a new Vanillaware game. This follows the Japanese release of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

In an interview with Dengeki Online, three key members of Vanillaware discuss the game’s development. This includes tidbits about the story’s production, time constraints, and hurdles with 2D animation. Said key members are George Kamitani himself, as well as Koichi Maeno (Designer, Animator), and Yukiko Hirai (Character Designer, Animator, Artist).

Arguably the juiciest morsel of information in this interview is Kamitani’s response to a question about possible extra content for 13 Sentinels, and what the future holds for Vanillaware. His response is, as follows:

“I guess it depends on Atlus and the users. As a part of public relations inviting misleads, I proposed the idea of DLC production, but it was no longer doable because of the schedule delay (tears).

The characters and I will be delighted if you can complement the story behind the story of this work and the later story! Vanillaware’s next challenge (work) has already begun, and the next one has already begun. Just because the battle of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is over, it does not mean we are through. If you stop going, your life will decrease steadily … We need to make as many as possible! Please look forward to our next work.”

Their next game project was initially teased in a hidden trailer at the end of the demo for 13 Sentinels. Now we have an official announcement, albeit with precious little information.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has unfortunately had somewhat of a mediocre performance in Japan. It only sold 100,000 copies in about three months, according to Famitsu. This includes digital and physical copies, as well as limited editions.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is out PlayStation 4 in Japan, and 2020 worldwide.

We will keep you informed as any further news breaks on this new Vanillaware game.
