New Final Fantasy XV Gameplay Shows Off New Combat, Base Infiltration

Square Enix has shown off new gameplay for Final Fantasy XV.

Featured above, the new gameplay shows off Noctis and crew infiltrating an enemy base in Niflheim.

It’s worth mentioning the camera has been improved quite a bit since the Episode Duscae demo, with it being automated when necessary so players won’t have to constantly maneuver it.

The cycling weapon selection has returned – a feature that has always been on the drawing board only to now actually be fully implemented into the game.

The UI has been changed quite a bit as well, with the team making final adjustments for the game’s UI. Weapons can be swapped out with the directional buttons, a change made from user feedback from the Episode Duscae demo.

Finally, it’s worth reiterating that Square Enix will announce the price, release date, and more during the Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV live event.

So is this Chapter 3 removed from The Phantom Pain? I wasn’t expecting the game to have this much of a drastic change of tone.

The enemies really stepped up their battle gear designs on the last chapter. Those things are practically half a metal gear at this point!

I’m surprised how much Final Fantasy has changed over the years from the simple turn-based formula. I’m all for the action RPG approach but for a minute before they get caught there, I thought I was watching a stealth game of some sort.

Am I the only one who thinks this game should’ve been its own IP instead of “Final Fantasy XV”?

Agreed, but to be honest what even is “Final Fantasy” anyway? Squeenix can slap the name on anything. I just hope the 10 years of development hell let’s this game be good.

I agree. If I didn’t know any better, based on this footage, I would think this is a sequel to “The Bouncer” more than I would Final Fantasy.

I think they’re establishing her as a rival of sorts. I’m just glad that they kept her during the transition from XIII-Versus to XV, because she actually seems like she could be a cool, constant threat through the game.

Exactly. Everyone keeps bitching about it but EVERY Final Fantasy has reinvented the franchise.

They all take place in different settings, with different plot templates, different character archetypes (and they try to not be tropey), and significant gameplay changes. This is the biggest departure yet in terms of gameplay. Because that’s what FF is all about.

If you want a traditional JRPG, play Dragon Quest.

    “reinvented the franchise”
Nothing as drastic as all the modern games. Each new entry pushes further and further away from what people enjoyed in Final Fantasy.

“different settings, with different plot templates, different character archetypes”
That’s no argument when everyone else does it too.

    “try to not be tropey”
    And fail miserably every time.

If you want an JARPG, go play Tales of.

“Nothing as drastic as all the modern games. Each new entry pushes
further and further away from what people enjoyed in Final Fantasy.”
That is called reinvention. If old fans don’t like it, tough. I don’t want to play the same game over and over with just minor iterations, that’s the call of duty formula only with longer production time.

There is a misunderstanding however. One thing is thinking a series should stick to some basic elements and add something new to the mix another one is doing whatever is popular nowadays and putting the name “Final Fantasy” on it.

Nobody is saying there should be no change between episodes in the series but at least some kind of DNA should be inherited.

You don’t expect a penguin being born from a cat, this is common sense.

Honestly this illusion of “reinvention” stinks to me because most of the time this means copying other games and in the end all you have got is a bunch of AAA games with near to nothing diversity and appeal.

    How can you tell?

  32. Viredae

Well, technically speaking, with the name Final Fantasy on the cover, and possibly a numeral number next to it.

That’s really the only qualification the series ever had.

If you want to talk about aesthetics, then by majority of design, VII didn’t even look like an FF game, IX and X did, so did XII.

By that logic, the only ones that looked the least like an FF game were VII, VIII and XIII, ironically, this list includes the game most widely accepted as the best AND worst installments.

So as far as the verdict of how it should look, I feel that the most correct answer is:

    Whatever they feel like it.

“Nobody is saying there should be no change between episodes in the series but at least some kind of DNA should be inherited.”

What does that even mean? Did you not play the demo? That was just about as Final Fantasy, if not more, than XIII was. Just because you see one video where you see guys shooting stuff does not mean it’s all going to be like that.

“You don’t expect a penguin being born from a cat, this is common sense.”

That’s kind of a dumb analogy. XV is still a RPG it just plays differently than other Final Fantasys, which to me is a great thing because I don’t want to play the same tedious turn-based game over and over again.

“Honestly this illusion of “reinvention” stinks to me because most of
the time this means copying other games and in the end all you have got
is a bunch of AAA games with near to nothing diversity and appeal.”
I think you mean “influences.” You think the first Final Fantasys were original concepts? Hardly. Am I saying is it always a home run, nope but there’s no reason to automatically bash it as there have been examples where it succeeds. It just comes down to waiting until it comes out and see if Square actually succeeds.

    1) If you don’t understand something that simple I don’t know what to do.

    2) Maybe you are dumb? That was not necessary. I am not talking about shallow definition that can enclose such a wide range of games without cognition I am talking about a number of characteristics that collectively make a game.

    3) Yes I am well aware of this yet you miss the point, this is the fifteenth episode not the first one.

Square Enix can do what they want with the series I am simply willing to explaining my point of view. If you are taking my words as an insult to your favourite games, please don’t.

Holy shit, can you control the other characters now? Cool. Looking forward to this tbh. Type 0 was fun (repetitive, but fun) and I want something new over another nostalgia-fest. It’s about time SE did something new with Final Fantasy. The obsession with sweet grafix still worries me a little though.
