New Beck Design and Japanese Box Art Revealed for Mighty No. 9

mighty no. 9 11-10-14-1

Mighty No. 9‘s has seen a recent update that confirmed a few interesting tidbits.

First up, protagonist Beck has gotten a new color palette of sorts, dropping the greys in his original design for a more neutral white. If you’re wondering why the creative team at Comcept decided to do this, let them explain:

From the very beginning we designed Beck to have a neutral, grey base, with the idea of wanting to make something completely new and unique.

But development soldiered on, and as we approached the last leg, we started looking closer at Beck. As a protagonist that could absorb the abilities of his siblings and take on various forms, our image of his appropriate color shifted from ‘neutrality’ to ‘containing all possibilities’… and since white is a combination of all colors of light, we felt that would actually suit his character better! Hence, we went with the coloring change.

Next, we’ve gotten the results of the fan poll to help decide the weapon of choice for Call, Beck’s partner:

Very interesting, so this means Call’s weapon in game will be a bow. For those Mega Man fans out there, this was also the weapon used by Roll.EXE in Mega Man Battle Network.

Last but not least, we have the official Japanese box art:

Mighty No. 9 is set for an April release next year across PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, 3DS, and Wii U.

I’m starting to wonder how much of Capcom rubbed off on old Inafune.

Mighty Number “Nope Don’t Buy It”. As long as they have that sociopath as a community manager gamers should not support Comcept.

I’m seriously doubting this whole thing. With them being on their 3rd crowfunding campaing, now asking money to make DLC.

After seeing ingame footage and hearing about the beta I am pretty convinced to not buy it. It doesn’t need to have to do with the community manager. I won’t buy it simply because it’s not the Megaman game I hoped it would be. Megaman had much more depth and complexity, Mighty no 9 is just a speedrun/scoreattack game. Even then, if you wanted a speedrunner a better choice would be Dustforce.

With all the money they’re getting, I hope the game will have fantastic, nearly Nintendo-levels of smooth polish. Especially when indies have shown us they can do way more with way less.

I like all three of the bottom designs. My favourite is the bottom left, but the bottom right is cute and the bottom middle reminds me of Sabrina from Pokemon, so that’s why I like her a lot))

The game looks lackluster and it doesn’t help that the community manager just made things worse.

I’m sure people would’ve been more forgiving had it not been for that case. People will still be disappointed, but not angry at least.

yeah the game doesnt look that good, since the first footage was released ive been thinking the level design looks way too linear and uninteresting with a focus on filling the screen with sparks, numbers, effects and other crap

looking at newer footage, it seems to dialed back the effects a bit (i can actually see whats happening!) but the level design looks as boring as they ever did

the fact the main gimmick of absorbing defeated enemies gets old even in 5 minute videos doesnt help either

What? It looked better before they changed Beck. Thumbs down… Plus isn’t this a fan-funded game? Who authorized this from the fan community?

    Dina, probably.

She’s community manager, supposedly she gives information to the development team from the fans. But we all know her behavior is less than… appropriate.

Still sad that the Flight Attendant Call design didn’t go through, looked rather cool (current feels way to much like Roll). It’s not the megaman game I was expecting, but it’s not bad by any stretch.

I’m going to admit, when I saw the words “New Beck Design” I was seriously thinking an actual redesign happened, and that it’d be some horrible Dina induced butchering. A slight color change isn’t so bad when considering that possible alternative.

And it would be really easy to provide the original colour scheme as well as other palette swaps as unlockable or… DLC content too. I was sure that a lot of companies pick 3D models nowadays for that reason.

I’m a little uneducated but aside from being a jerk on social media and seeming to be the only channel to contact Inafune and co, what has Dina butchered so far?

That “lovely” bit of “art” at the top of that is Dina’s handiwork.
    http://www.nichegamer.net/2013/12/the-dina-disaster-the-story-of-nepotism-and-mighty-no-9/
Dina’s personal agenda was never a real concern until she stated on twitter that she is also a designer and artist working on the project. So now, those concerns had real weight as the game concept they had backed could possibly be changed by people like her, who might be looking to push a personal agenda.

I feel like I heard about the statement before but haven’t seen an actual example of her contributions being used in the game.

What Mark MacDonald from 8-4 said in your second link still seems to hold true so far with her prior claim on Twitter being likely to be her posturing herself in Twitter as something bigger.

She isn’t someone that I would be “supremely confident” like “all the key players at Comcept… including Inafune himself”, but the changes she has made do seem limited to Twitter and other social media.

She may want to change the project but Inafune and co seem to know what they want to do. Everything from before she was the community manager to now in the game has remained the same… but the colour of Beck and things that we voted on ourselves.

What? So MegaMan can die faster? You pathetic fool. If Mighty No.9 Fails it will prove to Capcom that MegaMan isn’t Profitable. If Beck Fails. Rock will never see the light of surface ever again. You can bet your ass.
