Mortal Kombat 1‘s trailer just came out, showering us in both gore and questions. Shang Tsung is back, and he comes to the reboot swinging, killing multiple characters before the game even came out.
The first half of the trailer gives us a look at Kung Lao, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero, as well as Liu Kang, Mileena, and Kitana. Most of them get a few seconds of screen time before getting absolutely destroyed by Shang Tsung in the trailer’s second half.
So, we decided to catalog the deaths just to keep track of who may be present in the next game.
1: Scorpion
Hanzo Hasashi is the first one to go in the trailer, not yet having been reborn as Scorpion, the spirit of vengeance. He looks alive in the trailer, but not for long, a sShang Tsun slits his throat and drives a spiked gauntlet through his brain. He’s still sporting his signature Shirai Ryu yellow outfit, and his design seems pretty faithful to what we are used to.
2: Mileena
Mileena is the next one, still a half-tarkatan and sporting her iconic purple ninja outfit, but now with a different hair style shaved on the sides, which looks pretty fitting for her character. Her death doesn’t goes by really fast, and we only briefly see her neck getting snapped by Shang Tsung.
3: Sub-Zero
We don’t get a good glimpse at Sub-Zero due to his mask and the newer model not being very similar to his Mortal Kombat 11 counterpart. Here’s where things get muddy: we are still unsure if this is Bi Han or Kuai Liang since the game is a reboot and Kuai Liang has been gaining a lot more popularity than Bi Han. It could be that Kuai Liang is retconned into being the first Sub-Zero, as he is seen in a more amicable position towards Hanzo. We don’t see a lot of him and only get some brief shots before seeing him on the ground, getting his head stomped by Shang Tsung as well.
4: Kitana
Kitana is next, following Sub-Zero’s death. We see her slumped over on the ground as Shang Tsung digs his thumbs into her eyes. Her new design seems to be a compromise between her classic and Mortal Kombat 11 outfits, bringing some of the design associated with her character back.
5: Kung Lao
Kung Lao is seen at the beginning of the trailer living a peaceful life amidst a wheat plantation, but unfortunately, his peace doesn’t last for long. In one of the most brutal deaths of the trailer, he gets his soul drained by Shang Tsung, and then his head is slammed on the ground, killing him instantly. Kung Lao is pretty faithful to his original design and doesn’t seem to have a lot changed, he still seems to be losing fights like usual.
6: Shang Tsung
For the last death of the trailer, we have Shang Tsung himself. After going on a killing spree and challenging the now god-like Liu Kang, he gets torn apart by two massive spiritual dragons and then split down the middle. Thankfully, his design still seems to follow Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s likeness from the original movie, just as it did in Mortal Kombat 11. His outfit keeps some of the yellow highlights on the sleeves and belt, as well as some accents in his gloves and boots.
Wow, that’s a lot of dead characters. We don’t know how canonical this footage is to the final game yet, but it shows that the fatalities will be as brutal as ever, and it gives us a nice glimpse into some newer character designs and roster.
