So this explains all the shit with AM2R. Nintendo was working on their own Metroid 2 remake. It’s still totally scummy, but at least there’s a method to their scumminess and not just them tormenting Metroid fans for no reason?

Also it’s being developed by MercurySteam, the Lords of Shadow developers.

MercurySteam have now worked on both Metroid and Castevania. They could unironically write Metroidvania on their resumes.

As much as I’m glad we getting ANOTHER Metroid game and a 2D (well sidescrolling) one at that, the graphics look like ass to me compared to AM2R, sprites all the way baby!

I also wonder if the release of AM2R affected this game’s devlopment at all, from a bone fide remake, to a reimagining.

Looks like Nintendo was planning on remaking Metroid 2 all this time. I was still gonna buy it even with AM2R around. At least they’re making real Metroid games now.

AM2R fits in perfectly with the series glory days, while still doing enough new of its own.

This official thing seems more in line with Castlevania: Mirror of Fate on the 3DS; it doesn’t feel like more than a cheap handheld spinoff meant to tie people over when they would otherwise just get nothing instead.

They really should have announced this during last year’s E3. It’s coming out in only a few months so surely it was at least at MP4 levels of “we can show a title if nothing else” and besides that it would have really, really lessened the blow from simultaneously releasing an insult of a game like federation force and DMCAing a remake of one of their older titles (that they were doing themselves it turned out.)

If it was optional it wouldn’t be there, it will be a crucial component since it’s a new element and because of Nintendo’s beloved lock and key game design.

Judging by the half hour or so of gameplay, it looked completely optional. The chick who was playing even avoided using it for most of the fight against the gamma Metroid because it risks getting hit if not timed properly.

If it was some game breaking thing to make it nooby friendly, PR would usually brag about that in order to attract a “wider audience”.

The aiming looks shit because you hold down L and then switch from
moving to aiming. That is fucking awful compared to the rest of the
Metroid games. The punching might be “optional” but considering its use
in the trailer it’s probably intended to be used during boss battles. Regular enemies in the first area are not a good indication of much.

Lol the Prime games did the exact same thing with the aiming and they were still great, albeit not as snappy as the aiming in the GBA games, but I wouldn’t call it a deal breaker.

Also if you watch the Treehouse gameplay, the punching is a completely optional way of dealing with an enemy that gets too close, it actually looked pretty easy to mess up since it requires being precise. Strafing helped in the Prime games, but it wasn’t required either.

The Prime games were 3D which makes free aim a necessity, and I’m not exactly fond of its control scheme in the first place. In a 2D game it’s not, and not being able to aim and shoot is fucks up the flow immensely, as is evident in the Treehouse footage. The control scheme is one of the most important things about a platformer, so it’s not some autistic nitpick, it’s an actual problem.

AM2R was gonna get the boot regardless. Nintendo is famous for shitting on fan made games. But to be fair, if the creators called it anything but “Metroid” or “Pokemon” and changed up some sprites, they could sell their game and make a fair amount.

It’s annoying how scared Nintendo is to continue the story beyond Metroid Fusion. They left a huge gaping metaphorical door open with Samus finding out the Galactic Federation is just as guilty as the Space Pirates for research and development of Metroid B.O.W. I don’t care about that ship that was quietly watching Samus at the end of Metroid Prime 3. Just give us Metroid V, dammit.
