A proposal for a Metroid based Lego set has achieved enough support through the Lego Ideas scheme to be officially reviewed for production.

The Lego Ideas project encourages fans to build original works as a challenge, take part in contests, and submit their own ideas for Lego sets. The last of these involves a Kickstarter-style page, where an entry (either created with real Lego or digitally) must have 10,000 clicks of support to appear before Lego’s own panel.

Users can reveal additional ideas for the set as they get more support, but no money is given. An idea must get 100 supporters in 60 days, and further milestones up to 10,000 supporters in six months. After review and if the set is produced, the original designer will get 1% of total net sales, 10 complimentary sets of their Lego set, and credited in the set materials.

While Lego do not accept third party ideas they have already produced sets for (including previous Lego Ideas sets), past entries have resulted in sets based on Sesame Street, Friends, The Flinstones, Mickey Mouse, Voltron, The Beetles, Adventure Time, Doctor Who, and more. Now, a set based on Metroid may come to fruition.

While writing this piece, the set had 513 days to go, and already amassed 9,948 supporters. As this article was nearly completed, it has achieved its 10,000 supporter goal.

The set includes a Samus Aran minifigure in her power suit, Zero Suit Samus minifigure, two Space Pirates, the last baby Metroid sealed in a glass (plastic) container, Dachoras, and Etecoons (first seen and rescued in Super Metroid).

The set also features Samus’ gunship; complete with removable roof to see into the cockpit, Technic lift arm to deploy Samus, and secret door to launch Samus in her Power Ball form.

Samus’ gunship can also be built as the Hunter-Class gunship (as seen in Metroid Prime) complete with stud-shooters and display stand, and a Galactic Federation gunship (as seen in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption) that has landing gear and a trap door to deploy Samus.

The giant Ridley can also be built into other designs based on past entries, including Meta-Ridley, Omega Ridley, Proteus Ridley, and (though technically not a true Ridley), Robo Ridley – or rather Mecha Ridley. For fans of Bionicle, Ridley does utilize Mixel ball joints to give him enough poseability. Alternate Space Pirates colors and helmet designs for Samus have also been proposed.

Thanks to the Lego Super Mario set and the Lego NES, the idea of Metroid Lego may not be so far-fetched. We wil keep you informed as we learn more.
