Larian Studios: No Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or Baldur’s Gate 4 on the way

Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke announced today at GDC that there are no plans for Baldur’s Gate 3 expansions or DLC, and that they aren’t working on a hypothetical Baldur’s Gate 4.

Vincke spoke to a small crowd at GDC, saying that the company is done with the Dungeons & Dragons IP for now, and that it’s up to Wizards of the Coast where they take it going forward. So while there could be a fourth game in the series (eventually), it seems like it won’t be coming from Larian Studios. I’d say we’re about due for Neverwinter Nights 3 anyways, or how about anywhere off the Sword Coast?

“Baldur’s Gate 3 will always have a warm place in our hearts. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not going to continue it.

We’re not going to make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do.

We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do.

We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from D&D and we’re going to start making a new thing.

I’m saying this here because… we get bombarded by people that expect us to do these things. But that’s not for us.

It’s going to be Wizards of the Coast, because it’s their IP; to find somebody they can take over the torch. We did our job, and so for us it’s time to get a new puppy.

Baldur’s Gate 3 released late last year after a long development cycle, and impressed fans with its fully voiced story, colorful cast of characters, and translation of 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons to Larian’s combat engine.

The game even went on to win the Game of the Year award for 2023, beating out AAA titles like Starfield and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now on Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox. You can check out our review here (we recommend it!)
